Panamanian investigators unloading the cargo of a seized North Korean ship that carried arms from Cuba have found the two MiG-21 fighter jets the Cuban government had said were on board, the government said on Sunday.

Alongside the two supersonic planes, originally produced by the Soviet Union in the late 1950s, officials found two missile radar systems on board the Chong Chon Gang, President Ricardo Martinelli told reporters in the Atlantic port of Colon.

The discovery, which included cables and electrical equipment, was made inside containers on the ship Panama had feared might contain explosive material. None was found.

50’s tech to go along with the 50’s auto fleet? Maybe Cuba can rebrand itself as some sort of wayback machine theme park.

I didn’t realize it was that old. I think it was contemporary with the F-104 etc.

I think in Viet Nam they were considered an entirely adequate fighter to go against our latest ones.

In further news, there were reports of shipping containers of 6L6 amplifier vacuum tubes and cases of slide rules, including lubricant for super-slip-stick calculations.

When the North Koreans have achieved technological advances sufficient to launch electronic tubes into outer space, they will no longer need the vacuum enclosures and they will use less energy.

It is anticipated that the analog computers will outpace any technologies developed in the 20th century.

Rumors of containers including transistor radios exist, although they haven’t yet been proven.

“I think it was contemporary with the F-104 etc.”

You’re right. But the first flight of the F-104 was in 1954.

I heard a fairly strange account about that on the radio last night, that it was carrying something highly radioactive and hinting we could be looking at Cuban Missile Crisis II.

More from the Interesting Times department. They need a vacation. That group is putting in way too much OT.

The MIGs are probably for the Norks new Air and Space Museum. BTW, I am the proud owner of a K+E Jet Log Duplex Decitrig.

Um ... plastic slip-stick, good. But not a Log Log Duplex Decitrig (aka 4081) - engraved scales.

Of course, the DeciLon is also plastic - four matched Log-Log scales, with added Sq1/Sq2 scales.

Now, extend that with three cube scales, L/Ln (Dual Base) of Pickett's N3 (N4 has hyperbolics. but Log-Log scales are base 10) - done in metal ...

Tie those to a couple of 12AU7's and those glow on the dark.

the planes gave off a strong odor of gasoline, indicating that they had likely been used recently

"strong odor of gasoline".. Prob why they're sending them to be worked on , 'cause they're supposed to burn jetfuel (AKA Kerosene)

I had a Log Log Duplex Decitrig which was stolen, replaced it with the Jet Log which had a few more scales.
