Ireland, Fiji, Nepal to send peacekeepers to Golan Heights

JERUSALEM, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Ireland, Fiji and Nepal will send hundreds of troops to bolster the UN peacekeeping force in the Golan Heights, Israeli daily Ha'aretz reported Monday.

The latest development comes weeks after Austria withdrew its 380 troops from the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force ( UNDOF), citing deterioration of security situation due to the escalation in Syria's unrest.

According to the report, Ireland agreed to send a 150-strong well-trained and equipped infantry unit, which was previously part of the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali; Fiji would dispatch about 500 peacekeepers; and Nepal would redirect some 50 peacekeepers, currently deployed in Lebanon, to the Golan Heights.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also convinced the Philippines and India not to remove their combined 500 troops from the force.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said the UN's efforts to re-staff UNDOF were coordinated with Israel and done in "complete transparency," according to Ha'aretz.

Russia volunteered to send troops to replace the Austrians, but its permanent membership in the UN Security Council would have required special approval for such a move; and Israel, for its part, has rejected the proposal.

Interesting mix of Ireland, Fiji, Nepal, The Philippines and India. Obviously no Muslim countries are allowed to contribute to UNDOF.

Why don’t they send them to the Israeli side, so they can help the good guys keep the peace when necessary? Otherwise, they’re just going to get caught in the cross-fire.

Wow I read that wrong. I thought it said the Russians volunteered to send a bunch of Austrians.

The mention of Ireland is interesting, in that not that long ago some of the same folks who supported the Palestinian radical groups were also supporting radical groups in Ireland.

From what I’ve read they stay on the Israeli side exclusively. Since the Syrian side has changed hands several times and groups of blue helmets have been kidnapped twice (and released) I think they know where the threat comes from.

I’m glad to hear that. After the war against Hezbollah in Lebanon, the UN troops were on the other side, where the Muzzies basically used them as human shields.

The Fijiian troops will make it known that all captured jihadis are to be killed, barbecued, & eaten at festive long pig banquets.

They have brought their distinctive wooden forks for this purpose.

“Where’s the delegation from Liechtenstein?”

The four of them are on a covert mission to San Marino. They may just be able to thwart the invasion of Monaco.

I actually did spend about an hour in Liechtenstein a few weeks ago, while going from Lucerne to Innsbruck...even got my passport stamped there.

Apparently Andorra got wind of the invasion and warned them through their contacts at the Burkina Faso embassy.
