Yes, there’s something verging on the Sophoclean here - the dilemma of the monarch forced to choose between two mutually incompatible duties, to follow either of which at he expense of the other meant inevitable disaster, was one of the central themes of Greek tragedy. But to pursue that analogy would be absurdly to aggrandise the modern British royals, so I’d better stop there....!

The experts in crown geneaology are careful with their jobs, being “by appointment” etc. But in the BBC show they guy was accepting as plausible the potential for Edward the IV being illegitimate... and hence Henry VII marrying Edward’s heiress, Elizabeth of York to “legitimise” himself— did no such thing, since Elizabeth of York was progeny of an illegitimate.
