TRENTON — All it took was a phone call, and the New Jersey State Police were at their beck and call, ready to provide a celebrity, professional athlete or any other VIP with an escort — wherever they needed to go.
That’s according to a retiring state police sergeant who led a high-speed caravan of sports cars to Atlantic City in an incident that became known as "Death Race 2012."

From there they headed to the New Jersey Turnpike before ending the first leg of their trip at the Cheesequake Service Area on the Garden State Parkway, where they were met by 15 more sports cars, he said. He said he still thought he and Ventrella could handle the group.
"Obviously, I realize now I was very mistaken," Nassry said. "Due to lack of manpower, we weren’t able to handle this escort in a safe manner."
The ride through New Jersey led to complaints from the public. Witnesses said they watched as the two patrol cars, with their emergency lights flashing, led dozens of Porsches, Lamborghinis, Ferraris and other vehicles, all with their license plates covered with tape, at startlingly fast speeds that one person estimated at 110 mph.

Having driven the GSP and NJT many times, the speed violation rate is rampant.
Then over on the I-5 in Washington, north of Seattle, anything over five miles over the limit is asking for a violation, not that I got one. Just simple observance that I was never passed going at that rate.

When I was in the Army in Germany, I saved up my money and rented a Porsche for the weekend. I can personally attest that a Porsche’s handling and ride significantly improve above 120 mph. It almost starts to glide.

That’s loafing for most of those cars but don’t do that crap on a public road. You want to wring it out, take it to the track. Because Ma and Pa Kettle in their 80’s K-car aren’t going to be looking in their rearview mirrors for something approaching at a relative speed of 60 mph, that’s why.
That is faster than I’ve gone. I’ve seen 115 in both my ‘85 300ZX and my ‘91 Miata.
The Miata felt fine at that speed, but trust me, it did NOT have any more than that! The Z, on the other hand, felt a little spooky despite being about 1200lb heavier. I suspect the shape of its nose probably produced more front end lift than that of the Miata...
In both cases I was on I5 in central CA with very light traffic.

In 1985, I had a 1980/81 four cylinder Ford Escort up to 120 on a two lane country road with a death-gripped passenger. Never took it out of 2nd (very nash rambler).
