House votes to continue NSA surveillance program (217-205)

WASHINGTON - The U.S. House of Representatives has voted to continue the collection of hundreds of millions of Americans' phone records in the fight against terrorism.

The chamber rejected a measure to end the program's authority. The vote was 217-205 on Wednesday.

Republican Rep. Justin Amash had challenged the program as an indiscriminate collection of phone records. His measure, if approved by the full House and Senate and signed by the president, would have ended the program's statutory authority.

The White House, national security experts in Congress and the Republican establishment had lobbied hard against Amash's effort.

Libertarian-leaning conservatives and some liberal Democrats had supported Amash's effort.

The vote was unlikely to settle the debate over privacy rights and government efforts to thwart terrorism

Rep Louie Gohmert (R-TX) was on Glenn Beck's show, earlier. He said he consideres Bachmann a dear friend, but cannot begin to understand why she would not just vote how she did, but flat out say what she did to justify her vote.

Beck and cohorts were saying the same thing...why she said there's a "false narrative" about what the gov't is collecting.

Gohmert doesn't get why Bachmann and Steve King voted against this bill, knowing full well what all IS being collected.

after reading the comments. bachman and king voting no means i’ll have to take a second look at what was being voted on. they are at least principled. wouldn’t put it past boehner and cronies to bring this to a vote just to sow dissention among conservatives.

” There is no political party left to support.”

Correct. They now meet 100% behind closed doors,(like the Benghazi probe) and divvy up the spoils.

Note that if patriots and concerned citizens get their acts together and elect 2/3 conservative majority in each House of Congress in the 2014 elections, Congress will have the constitutional authority to do the following.

Clause 2 of Section 7 of Article I will give a 2/3 supermajority of Congress the power to override presidential vetoes. This means that Congress will be able to repeal Obamacare and close down both the IRS and the NSA without Obama’s signature.

I’m surprised at Michele Bachmann.

Bachmann was told that the content of the letters (emails) are not read just the sender and reviver. I could organize that on a simple server if I had the basic access. She forgets that it doesn't take a congregational vote for just that information.

She states that here:
Bachmann about 7:45

She is in line with 'the government is here to help' and trusts that belief.

My take on this even the most respected person in government will eventually give in to the belief that government has the answers to our problems and not the people.

This Congressional Map shows how yesterday’s NSA vote cut across partisan divides

map of the U.S. by Congressional District, with Republican seats in red and Democratic ones in blue

same districts, colored instead based on how members voted on the Amash amendement — white is “aye,” black is “no,” and pink is “no vote.”

The republic is dead. All hail Caesar.

Not just zer0 who crossed the Rubicon. This NSA as we know it now began after 9/11 2001. This was Bush's baby

Glad to see my guy McClintock was on board. Would hate to have to vote against him.

Any politician that voted for this is either a traitor, or a crook afraid of what the NSA knows. Every single one of them need to be thrown out of Office.

To clarify, a vote for the measure would have stopped funding

A "No" vote (against the measure) Kept funding the NSA's prying

The correct vote was "for" the measure, the incorrect vote was "against" the measure, and the "no" votes won, so funding will be continued.

Did the aye indicate a vote to end the program???

Correct, a "yes" vote would have ended the program, a "no" vote continued it.

Long before computers I met a retired Police chief of a large southern city...He used to brag about his “files” and how much power they afforded him...after a few yrs. of “service” he was in position to write his own ticket .

I think the head of NSA is now in charge.from the texas republicans abandoning the “anti groping bill” to Roberts vote.Thats what it looks like.from the uninformed here.

Seems this sort of thing eventually happens in any human social organization.A hedonism fueled quest for resources leads to corruption and eventually generalized debasement.

Hos many claims for redress of violations of civil rights due to provisions of the Patriot Act have been filed?
Our court dockets should be choking.

With the DB you'd likely need to use something like:
DROP DATABASE LIKE %%;
rm *.* is for a *nix command-line, not a DB.

If we had judges and a court system that the Founding Fathers envisioned to uphold The Constitution, this vote would be insignificant, because it would be slapped down in the courts. For a long time judges have been put in place who place THEIR values above ours and now we’re on the verge of banana republic status complete with a two-bit dictator.

My question is: when it would be appropriate to find out if black-robes are tar-replant?
