How is it even possible to drive any vehicle 175 feet off a boat ramp and into 20 feet of water? Makes no sense.

Hi, yes it is. Somehow there is a Fates story in there, perhaps something by Piers Anthony.

It reminds me of a female in New Orleans who jumped off of the Claiborne Avenue bridge over the Industrial Canal, apparently trying to commit suicide. This was at night.

She jumped in a shallow part of the canal and her feet stuck in the mud.

Come morning she was hollering. She was afraid that the tide would come in and drown her. ;-)

Another guy trying to kill himself jumped off of the Mississippi River bridge. This was also at night. He survived the jump and was swimming to shore when a tugboat ran over him!

When it is your time, it is your time, period.

Why would it be that hard? They were driving in fog, couldn’t see more than 20 feet ahead. The boat ramp was at the end of the “road”, since they were in a parking lot. They just drove into a puddle which turned out to be a lake, and she was probably driving too fast for conditions because they were late and wanted to get home, and by the time she realized it wasn’t a puddle, it was too late.

I’m looking for a google map picture of the boat ramp.

Found it, and yep, the road literally just runs into the water. And of course, the ramp is made for that, it goes in shallow.

And now I’m thinking that if the park had been privately owned, there would be a lawsuit about having a gate across the road before the boat ramp, to prevent accidental drowning. But since this is a state park, I don’t think there is a legal way to sue.

Oh my, how awful...

Dear Lord, please rest their souls, erasing the horror of those last moments for all of them.

I believe that there are boat ramps that must accommodate very large variations in lake water levels. When the lake is at its peak height, the boat ramp may appear to be very short. However, under the water, the ramp continues at the same slope for whatever length is needed to make the ramp usable when the lake level is low.

The momentum of the vehicle will carry it quite far whether it floats out into the lake or rolls on the ramp underwater.

If they could not see more than 20 feet, they should have been driving an appropriate speed - particularly in a strange area. But how does one drive down a boat ramp, at any speed, and not notice one is entering water?

Seems to me either suicidal tendencies are required, or extreme stupidity.
