A San Antonio Marine Corps veteran spending Wednesday afternoon with his family on the Medina River made the heroic, fateful decision to sacrifice his own life while rescuing two teens caught in the undertow, according to authorities. Master Sgt. Rodney Buentello was visiting Bandera City Park when an unidentified teen girl tried crossing the dam, a violation of city ordinance, the Bandera Marshal's Office said in a statement. A male teenager followed her in an attempt to save her, but was also swept away, prompting Buentello to jump into action."(He) went into the water and managed to save both of...

As described in this paper "DROWN: Breaking TLS using SSLv2" (PDF), it is possible to crack current TLS encryption using an old, obsolete, but nevertheless still deployed protocol, SSLv2. This is a server-side issue -- it is not something clients (normal users) can do anything about. Folks browsing the web have to rely on the system admins at their favorite websites, mail portals, banks, shops, etc. to fix this. It is estimated that a third of the public servers on the Internet are vulnerable to this attack. You can test the servers in a given domain using this tool from...

CALEXICO, Calif. (AP) -- A government agency on the front lines of the immigration debate has begun installing lifesaving buoys in a fast-moving canal along the U.S.-Mexico border where migrants drown each year as they sneak into the country illegally. The debate over the lifelines has long presented authorities with a moral dilemma: Is it acceptable to do nothing when so many immigrants are dying in the water?

I always wondered how these jokers planned to get off the ship if or when their demands were met. It's sort of like hijacking a tree. We can see you - you know. There's no other way out.I just figured that they would demand an escape boat which would promptly be sunk by the U.S. Navy once all the bad guys and their booty were aboard. So when I read the story yesterday that the guys not only got the ransom, they just got on a boat and seemingly got away, I was amazed. I thought maybe the clever buccaneers...

Charleston, SC (AHN) - A 10-year-old South Carolina boy died of "drowning" several hours after he was on dry ground, a coroner's report has found. Johnny Jackson died of "dry drowning," a form of asphyxiation that happens when a small amount of water gets into the lungs and damages tissue, causing the lungs to swell and fill up with water. The boy's mother, Cassandra Jackson, said Johnny went swimming in a local pool at Goose Greek on Sunday. Though the child didn't show any signs of respiratory distress, he "soiled himself," NBC News reported. He walked home with his mother...

The deaths, which occurred over the course of several days last week, are said to account for about one percent of the total species population. The drownings created a grotesque wildlife pileup, after part of the migrating herd tried to ford the Mara at "a particularly treacherous crossing point," according to Terilyn Lemaire, a conservation worker with the Mara...

On a recent Friday morning, a line of bathing-suit clad students stood beside a campus swimming pool, waiting to jump in. They had come to persuade the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill they were worthy of a college degree — which they were not, in UNC's eyes, until they could swim 50 yards and tread water for five minutes. For many, it was an annoying inconvenience, for others a moment of pride in conquering their fear of water. He'd be loath to admit it, a Che T-shirt wearer and all, but Eric Burdon of the Animals wrote a song that resounds with many Cubans: "We gotta get outta this place-- if it's the LAST thing we EVER do!" The last thing, indeed, for one in three desperate escapes. According to Cuban-American scholar Dr. Armando Lago this hideous arithmetic translates into 83,000 deaths at sea over the past 46 years. That's people perishing like captives of the Apaches, staked in the sun and dying slowly of sunburn and thirst. That's others gasping and choking after their arms and legs...

Babalu blog's Val Prieto, who was profiled recently on the front page of the Miami Herald as a brilliant new voice of the often-dismissed Cuban-American community, has a striking update about the Elian Gonzalez case. Back in 2000, the rescue of the 6-year-old Cuban refugee by fishermen off the coast of Florida triggered a three-way tug-of-war between Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, the cowardly Clinton Administration, and the Cuban-American community over custody of the child. The Clinton administration resolved the question with a savage pre-dawn raid, grabbing the terrified child at gunpoint from his Miami relatives and delivering him straight to...

On one farm several hundred head of cattle were recently driven into a dam to drown while others were penned into paddocks, in searing heat, to starve to death.
