Pope Francis on Thursday issued the first social manifesto of his young pontificate, telling slum dwellers in Brazil that the world's rich must do much more to wipe out vast inequalities between the haves and the have-nots.
The pope also urged Brazil's youth, who have taken part in recent protests showing discontent with the status quo, to keep alive their "sensitivity towards injustice" and be a catalyst in the fight against corruption.
The first Latin American pope, who has rallied the Church on behalf of the poor and who lives more austerely than his predecessors, called for a "culture of solidarity" to replace the "selfishness and individualism" prevailing in modern society.
"No one can remain insensitive to the inequalities that persist in the world," he told residents of Manguinhos, a sprawling shantytown, or favela, of ramshackle brick dwellings that until recently was overrun by violence and controlled by drug lords.

I've always been told that the key to a country's general success is to have a middle class. The most successful countries have the largest middle class, with minorities (numerically) at the wealthiest and poorest ends.
That ‘individualism’ thing is horrific. Time to dump it.
It would be justice if the Pope renounced his position so that a very deserving Cardinal could take his place. After all, they have suffered for so long and his selection deprived them of their rightful rewards.
It’s not his to keep or sell for his own use. He just lives there. Like someone occupying the White House.
This Pope has always lived austerely, monied or not. He chose that path when he was young. He CHOSE to take buses, live in small, humble abodes, live humbly. He even dresses away from the pomp and ceremony of the papacy.
He is unusual.

It may be nice for the rich to be charitable, but that isn't the key thing -- no one buys their way into heaven.
I would say it is much more in line with Church teaching to have the poor behave in a Godly manner which will help them and their families rise up through renouncing sinful behavior.

Voluntary sharing with the poor is something Jesus encouraged. As long as the Pope is not advocating government confiscation from the rich to give to the poor, he’s preaching Christianity, not Communism.
I think the thing we need to remember is that not all rich people in all countries are alike. Some people in various countries really believe that they are aristocrats, not cut from the same cloth as other people, and so debt slavery and other abuses are par for the course. I was just reading about a factory in Bangladesh in the WSJ today. The worker said it was better than her last job because there was “no hitting”. Rich people who run their companies like that are the target of the Pope’s message, I think. I think he is talking about a baseline of just behavior, and not about communist, government-mandated redistribution.
