Did You Know, You Can Be Fired For Being Gay?

In 2013, it's difficult to believe that in most of the country, it's legal to fire workers for their sexual orientation or gender identity.  It doesn't matter how good you are at your job, if your employer doesn't approve of who you are, he or she can fire you and you have no legal recourse.  The country has long had laws that protect workers from being fired based on their race, gender, religion, disability or other characteristics of their identity.  But sexual and gender identity aren’t usually among those protections.

The AFL-CIO supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) currently before Congress.  William Samuel, the director of the labor federation's Department of Legislation, sent the following letter to senators July 9:

I am writing on behalf of the AFL-CIO to urge you to vote for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2013 (S. 815). The AFL-CIO believes it is wrong for any employer to discriminate against or fire a worker based on actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. Discrimination in the workplace has no place in the United States.

I did not know that,the afl-cio is so informative.

I always knew that if your in a union,and are worthless,you can't be fired.

Yup. When I was in the AFL-CIO one of my co workers was gay. I didn’t really think anything of it because he did his job.

I did call him Dorothy because of the red shoes he wore all the time.

Discrimination in the workplace has no place in the United States.

This is the basic problem, for me.

This should be true FOR GOVERNMENT JOBS. Those jobs should be open to all comers.

As a PRIVATE employer, I should be able to HIRE you or FIRE you...

"Discrimination" is not an ugly word.

It's how we differentiate ourselves.

I don’t know if you are gay until you tell me. You know what? Your sexual activity has no place for discussion in the workplace. Therefore, you are fired for bringing it up.

People lambasted Clinton for Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, but, in reality, it was a great position.

Sexual behavior at he workplace is no one’s business.

If you insist on identifying yourself by your sexual behavior, then I have the right to discriminate.

This is such a misnomer. What does "being 'gay'" even mean? How does one be "gay?" Are they having sex on their desk?

Some male employee who is inordinately effeminate can be distracting and inimical to workplace productivity. It's more likely an issue of being flamboyant, political and disruptive - all characteristics that warrant a good firing.

Freedom of Association - an outdated concept created by a bunch of dead racist white men according to these jerkwads.

BTW if my boss was gay and he wanted to fire me for being straight, I wouldn’t want to work for him. His right, and his loss. But then again I don’t have a need to validate my sexuality by parading it around and demanding others “accept” (bow down to) me. See, I am comfortable in my own skin...

The guy I worked with wasn’t disruptive or anything, it was just like talking with one of the girls.

He was an inspector and was off in his area doing his job and I never had any issues with him.
