I took a look. Oil has been leaking into the gulf since time immemorial as well. Regardless, I think the risk to a few water wells is worth it. Worst comes to worst, haul in drinking water. And use the well water to heat your house.
Mining has inherent ecological risks and the risks that fracking pose pale when compared to those of say gold mining. No such thing as a free lunch.
The oil industry pays attention to the rigors of literacy. One day at oh-dawn-thirty, I sat and listened to a couple of tool pushers and the operator's "company man" and his night relief discussing the grammatical niceties of the overnight drilling report they'd just sent in. The rig had previously set casing and cemented it overnight by the "squeeze" technique, and the discussion revolved around the principal parts of "to squeeze". They finally accepted "squeezed" and "squoze", but rejected "done squozed" as ungrammatical.
The link below will take Freepers to the many excellent articles on Fracking and how/why the enviro whackos, Opecker Thug supporters and rats worse fear is the coming of fracking here and around the world.
