They hear it in Windsor, Ontario across the river from Detroit too ...

Canada to Study Mysterious ‘Windsor Hum’

“Some people have described the sound as a low, humming drone. Others say it changes into a heavy “whump, whump, whump” sound. Still others have compared it to the bass rumblings of soul singer Barry White.”

On a rare occasion I have heard it at night when I am in bed. It seems to comes for a few days and then disappears. I have gotten up at night and with an audio amplified parabolic dish, I have never found it. It seems to disappear once outside. Go back into the bedroom and one hears it. Nothing audible in the attic either. Nothing running in the house... I even killed the service coming into my home and still it is there. I have not heard it in some time but this is a real hum that exists. My dogs can hear it also... but my wife never has.

I’m over 50 and under 60, and I heard it. It sounds like a sonic code to me. Almost like Morse code which I don’t know except that it goes long and short, which this seems to do. Has anyone checked it for that type of signaling? short short short long? It is not a steady hmmmmmmmmmmmmm or buzzzzzzzzzzz, it has alternation to it. There was also some other brief more localized noise which I took to be either the wind against the microphone or the way the microphone was being handled. Not sure what I make of it.

I have thought about that also... and it could be ULF transmissions.

I just listened to the video and I didn’t hear a humming sound. All I heard where clicks or taps, not a continuous sound. I guess my tinnitus blotted it out. :)

That hum video woke my dog up, with her ears forward and sent my cats running all over the house looking for it.

I’d heard hums like that in the burbs-still a noisy place- but you could always identify the source after awhile by narrowing it down to what power tools and such were being used nearby. When I moved back to the country where you can hear whippoorwills on the ranch a mile away, and a leaf falling in your yard, I was freaked out the first time I heard a hum on a quiet night-and felt it through the boards of the deck. You can hear planes sometimes, but this was clearly not a plane-it didn’t fade in one direction after a bit.

Other people on the road heard it, too-when we investigated we realized there was a very faint glow where the hum seemed to come from-and a small gravel quarry on the county road over there that sometimes runs a night shift-mystery solved. That quarry is nearly 19 miles away, over some high, wooded limestone hills-sound really travels through rock...

I have never heard it when it is raining. I will let you the next time that I hear it. I listened to the You Tube link and the hum that I hear is not so much a buzz... it does sound somewhat like a diesel engine at idle but not quite. That is a close description. I have excellent hearing and I am 58. I also am also fluent in Morse Code at speeds of up to 45 WPM and I have never heard any code characters. I have also heard it just stop... sometimes not returning until the next day... sometimes returning very quickly. I do think that it is using certain resonant structures as transducers because I can only hear it from one room in my house and it is not any external source because I have actively tested and eliminated anything within a 1/2 mile. I live in a very rural area and there is no industry nearby. I do hear a train that has tracks about 2 miles from me but that is distinct and is always heard from anywhere I go... including outside.

Assuming it's real and not an neurological artifact (heheh) it's possible your house has is resonating to some vibration and some of the energy is released as a higher/lower frequency noise you can hear. If it seems you can only hear it in one spot but can't get a direction on it the source might be an interference caused by reflection. We had a wood-frame waterbed sitting on a ground floor slab that would resonate to earthquake P-waves , if you were laying in it you would hear a distant bell tolling from a far-away earthquake. But you would hear nothing if not in the bed. It took a few near-by earthquakes to make the connection.

I remember hearing about this off and on over the years. It’s fun to speculate about the source.
