Battle of Falkirk Commemorated
The Falkirk Herald ^ | 28 July 2013 | Stuart Barber

Posted on 07/27/2013 7:12:01 PM PDT by ConorMacNessa

The 1298 Battle of Falkirk was remembered on Saturday.

The Society of William Wallace invited the pipes and drums of Uphall Station Pipe Band to lead the parade from the High Street to the memorial cairn at Callendar Park.

Speeches were given by the society’s Amber McCann and ‘Yes’ campaign co-ordinator for Falkirk Keith Houston before wreaths were laid in memory of the fallen.

Society member Gordon Aitken said: “We would like to make more people aware of this event and Falkirk’s historical past and ask them to join us next year.”

The event was completed with an evening ceilidh in Camelon Bowling Club.

Edward I defeated William Wallace at the battle of Falkirk. But Wallace’s scorched earth retreat halted the English Army.

But the battle to remember is Bannockburn. Robert the Bruce defeated King Edward II.

“The Battle of Bannockburn became the greatest victory in the history of Scotland. “

My Mother and Father had Scottish names as did my Grandparents and GGrandparents except for one Collins which is Irish.

My Mother’s family name is MacDuffie and her line has been totally traced back to the 1400s on the Island of Colonsay. They have been roughly traced even farther back. Several of the men have had DNA tests done which confirms their exact line and also proves their wives were true women.

My Mother is the best person I have ever known. She was a kind, gentle, and tender Mother who also fiercely defended her children from wild hogs on two separate occasions. Her entire life was devoted to serving her family and her God. She had no vices of any kind. When Mother died I told my Daughter that Mother was the most Christlike person I had ever known and my daughter said she thought the same thing.

Scottish blood flowed through her veins and it was of the highest and purest blood there is.

Here's a little something offered in atonement:

"Amazing Grace"

Wish I could have been there for that. Maybe next year.

I’ve been to Stirling. Quite moving, actually.

My grandmother’s maiden name was Robertson. Her mother and father came over to the states in the 1870s. We go back a ways in the highlands (clan Donnaichaid).

My grandmother was much like your mother. My auntie was also like your mother. My mom was bit more fiery. Fortunately my daughter is more like my grandmother than she is like me. I tend to be a bit fiery like my mom

Mother’s family came over around 1741. They first landed in Wilmington, N.C. but were in the Florida panhandle by the late 1700s.

Now my Daddy’s family were the fiery ones. Red headed and just about crazy at times. My Grandfather who was also a preacher killed a man and went to prison. He was actually innocent and the Governor pardoned him.

My Mother liked Daddy’s family but she pointed out to me that every one of Grandmother’s brothers were killed in fights while drunk. While sober they were as nice as could be but get them drunk and they wanted to fight. I think that is a bit of a Celtic tendency.

My family has not been able to find only the vaguest records of family in Scotland, with no Clan affiliations. The left Scotland in the early 1790’s.

At least we know they were on the right side during the Wars of Independence. An ancestor was knighted by Robert the Bruce for services rendered during the lead-in to Bannockburn.

The family were likely Flemish tradesmen and landowners imported by an earlier King, but that cannot by confirmed. In any case, the family owned one village in the N Central borders region and another N of Glasgow at the foot of the highlands. Given the locality, could have been involved at Falkirk, who knows?

Oh you are accurate about that. The sober ones in my clan are marvelous in so many ways.....the drunks, well we just keep hoping they will come around
