MORELIA, Mexico (AP) — Gunmen ambushed and killed one of Mexico's highest ranking navy officials and the officer escorting him Sunday in the rough western state of Michoacan, authorities said. Two other people were injured in the shooting in an area where a fight between rival drug cartels has caused a new outburst of violence.

The state prosecutors' office said the attack on Vice Adm. Carlos Miguel Salazar happened on a dirt road near the town of Churintzio. The motive was unclear, but Salazar is the top navy commander in the neighboring Pacific coastal state of Jalisco.

Attacks by Mexican cartels on military personnel have occurred, but are relatively rare. Salazar may be the highest military officer slain since the government began an offensive against the cartels in late 2006.

Admiral in the Mexican navy? Was he the one in charge of blowing up the float tubes?

The Mexican Navy and Marines are the least corrupted of the national forces and are thus tasked with leading the assault on the cartels.

Admiral meets drug cartel on dirt road? I’ve probably watched too many episodes of Breaking Bad, but that just doesn’t smell right.

Was he the one in charge of blowing up the float tubes?

The Mexican Navy has, in addition to their float tubes, two destroyers and five frigates purchased from the US, two missile boats purchased from the Israelis, 17 patrol boats and 4 LSTs.

That is absolutely correct. Some may recall several years ago that a particular Mexican Marine had been the driving force behind the capture of one of the more sinister drug lords. The Government decorated him, and, by doing so, let the druggies know who he was. They killed his family all the way out to aunts and uncles. The Navy then declared war on the Cartels, and has been very effective ever since.

It is worrisome that the druggies, in this case, seem to have gotten actionable intelligence and managed to do something with it. Up to now, the Navy has been very secure and uncorrupted. That an Admiral could get taken down in an ambush is a bad sign. Traitor in the midst...

It is a knee-jerk reaction among some to simply bash the Mexicans as all drunks, druggies and sloths. That’s about as true as “All Americans love Il Douche.” Try and remember that...

I was wondering when the drug cartels would turn to the leadership of the navy. The Mexican Marines have been tearing them up.
