Woonsocket hopes supplemental tax will be end of deficits
Providence Journal ^ | July 28 2013 | JOHN HILL

The supplemental tax will raise $2.5 million from multifamily residential real estate and motor vehicles, and the money will be used to balance the 2012-13 budget, which ended June 30. That assessment is also built into the 2013-14 tax rate, along with a 4-percent tax increase and a cut in the homestead exemption, which means the average homeowner in the city will see a 23-percent increase in his or her tax bill.

The average residence in Woonsocket is worth $150,000. Assessor Christopher Celeste said that meant a tax bill of about $2,952 in the last budget year. But this fiscal year, with the cut in the exemption and the rate increase, that owner will owe about $3,629, an increase of $677.

IIRC I recently read that Rhode Island has the highest unemployment rate in the country. It's been run by Maoists for years so that doesn't surprise me one bit.

” that owner will owe about $3,629, an increase of $677.”

No problem. Just add $677 to the EBT cards. Nothing to see here, move along.

No, throwing your liberal @$$ out of office and replacing you with conservatives, will curtail the deficit.

I suspect the U-Haul franchises in the Woonsocket area will be doing a brisk business......for One-Way Hauls, that is.

Wishful thinking but I suspect the lemmings will suck it up to help out their local minority teat suckers. It makes them feel good to assist the lazy feral illegals and slavery victims.

It would be the first time....liberals always flee when they foul their own nest.

So, once the new taxes wipe out the deficit, will the taxes drop down to what they were, or will they simply find new things to spend the money on?

(Rhetorical question, I already know the answer.)

Taxpayers in Flint, Mich. had to pay an extra surtax to pay off a judgment on a 19 story building that is due to be demolished within a couple of weeks.

Best decision of my life.

Ha! Just went through that here in Jax, FL.

Tax receipts were low, and the City council and po-po were crying there wasn’t enough $$ to keep the gravy train going as it has been. That is, too, when things WERE booming, they were the 1st to be bellied up to the trough “We have ‘extra’ $$ to hire XYZ!”.

Never did you hear the talks, nor a question, about doing with less.

Don’t even get me started on the pension reform that was passed up as well....3rd rail around here as well.

The deficit will not be wiped out of course. Since the tax is higher they will decide they can also spend more.

Ha. They must think the tax and flee model works well enough; or their Citizens are stupid enough to allow it to happen.

Most likely the latter.

Oh, Shirley, certainly you jest, thinking that more tax revenue will end deficit spending.

Yep. Friends and family unhappily living up in MD. Not sure what straw will be the last, but I fear most of ‘em will take it and continue to grumble til they die....or go broke.

As much as I love my family, I am not the ‘battered wife syndrome’ type to stay and be miserable/poor all the time.

Can’t cut a thing, already cut to the bone.

They should have to re-approve these taxes every year.
