Rand Paul needled him last night on Hannity’s show for taking a “gimme, gimme, gimme” attitude towards federal spending on Sandy relief. Here’s Christie needling him back by accusing Paul and his home state of Kentucky of being a couple of deadbeats:
I find it interesting that Sen. Paul is accusing us of having a gimme, gimme, gimme attitude towards federal spending when in fact New Jersey is a donor state and we get 61 cents back on every dollar we send to Washington, Christie said. And interestingly, Kentucky gets $1.51 on every dollar they send to Washington. So if Sen. Paul wants to start looking at where hes going to cut spending to afford defense, maybe he should start cutting the pork barrel spending that he brings home to Kentucky
David Frum made a similar point this morning before Christie spoke. If you look at this Economist chart of federal spending and revenue per state from 1990 to 2009, New Jersey was the third biggest net exporter of tax dollars while Kentucky was the 13th biggest net importer. Christie, who accepted a temporary (but not permanent) expansion of Medicaid under ObamaCare, ain’t the guy to be attacking Paul on spending, but that’s the point here: He’s trying to inoculate himself from the damaging big-spender charge in the 2016 primaries by arguing that even libertarians like their tax money. The kicker is his dismissal of Paul as a “Washington politician,” which is … not the way most people think of Rand. But that’s strategic too. The rap on Christie two years from now will be that he’s the champion of the Republican establishment (which is true). This is him trying to muddy those perceptions by arguing that even the famously anti-establishment tea-party senator is really just a big ol’ Beltway parasite at heart.
Anyway, the takeaway is that both of these men must run for president. We want these debates. We need these debates. In fact, one X factor with Christie is whether his willingness to throw punches at grassroots heroes will end up helping him or hurting him with the centrists he’s targeting in the primaries. I agree with Dan McLaughlin that the real winners in this brawl are Rubio, Cruz, and Walker because space is being cleared in the center-right between Christie and Paul for one (or more) of them, but who knows? (Here’s a smart counter-take.) An “angry RINO” charging at rivals on the right would be a novel thing for a GOP primary; normally the RINO is a hapless figure like Romney who tolerates being dumped on by grassroots righties because he knows he needs conservatives in the general election and doesn’t want to alienate them by firing back. Christie might figure that he’ll do well enough with centrist Democrats as nominee that he can afford to lose a few stalwart conservatives. I think he’s wrong about that, if so, but either way, these primaries will be dynamite.
New Jersey has the highest property taxes in the United States, Fatboy! Where did you spend the money?
I’m guessing that Ft Campbell (101st Air Assault Division) and Ft Knox (home of the Army’s Armor School - now at Ft Benning GA - for a good number of the years in question) played a little bit of a role in the disparity.
Democrats LOVE democracy.. a.k.a banana republic..
Republicans LOVE “the Republic”..
The US Constitution has NOWHERE in it the words democracy or democratic..
AND thats WHY? it must be abridged....... i.e. abrogated..
(made toilet paper out of)..
Re photoshop job of McCain's face on a rhino's body (which is a really good job of it I must say):
Maybe somebody should put a rhino's head on Christie's body. Everybody would know who it is.
Democrats only love democracy when they win. When they lose, the imperial courts are used to overturn the will of the people.
Caution: GasBag discharging.
What someone’s state does is entirely out of the hands of a single politician. The measure is what that politician requests in the way of federal funding or vehemently supports in the way of federal funding.
Paul is right. Christie has been licking the drippings from the federal gravy train, and in fact, his obeisance over it to Obama at a pivotal point in the last election became a major talking point for the liberals.
Paul, on the other hand, has not been pushing the gravy train by way of bills OR earmarks for his state of Kentucky.
One last word, if I were Christie, I wouldn’t be crowing loudly about my state getting taken to the cleaners by the Fed, getting back only 61 cents on the dollar. The Fed is taking NJ’s money, and NJ doesn’t seem competent to get most of it back.
Californians complain that they send more money to D.C. than they get back and that they have to raise State taxes to make ends meet. I tell them that if they quit voting for a central gov’t that confiscates money from citizens to pay for things that are not constitutional for the Federal gov’t to spend on, Californians could keep more of their money in their State.
Good point.
Christie receives huge donations from the neo consrvatives. Rand Paul is the leader of the neoisolationist movement in the US which is gaining traction among hard pressed Americans who wonder if the extensive and bloody foreign entanglements really benefit the United States. Christie won’t be the only attacker Senator Paul will confront if he decides to run for President.
Is Paul governor of Kentucky? What’s he talking about? Apple and Oranges, typical liberal insane dichotomized reply.
I hope that this fight will shed some light on Christie’s real policies.
My understanding is that while he did reduce state pension obligations, he really has pushed the financing of state debt off into the future when he will be out of office. Exactly what he criticized the dems for.
I believe the plan is to delay certain costs by gimmicks such as selling toll highways, but there is no sign of that happening.
Also I know Christie has empowered corrupt South Jersey Dems in order to split the dem party. It’s good for him, but it has allowed democrat power and money grabs to go unchecked.
Exactly. They always just say that red states receive x amount..they never explain where that money goes.
I think it's pretty evident that both men are.
RE: Is Paul governor of Kentucky?
Not defending Christie, but I think his point is that as SENATOR, Paul helps writes or pass the laws that determine which states gets Federal money, not Christie, who does not write Federal laws.
In this sense, Christie is telling Rand Paul -— Hey, you’re writing laws that in effect, take money from states like NJ to benefit Kentucky (even when Kentucky never experienced a devastating hurricane), so quit whining about NJ when she gets Federal aid for Sandy.
Your comment plays into the Fat Boy's arguement: If NJ has the highest property taxes in the Country, then its only because the inside-the-beltway politicians like Rand Paul take more money from New Jersey, than they give back.
Here’s my problem with Christie:
He cozies up to Obama for personal selfish reasons - to win re-election in NJ. In doing so he props up a socialist and helps him win a second term.
So Christie is selfish and could care less about any other Republican. two strikes
