Armed agents raid animal shelter for baby deer

KENOSHA, Wis. —WISN 12 News investigates an operation raising questions about the use of government resources and the state policy that meant a death sentence for a fawn.

"It was like a SWAT team," shelter employee Ray Schulze said.

Two weeks ago, Schulze was working in the barn at the Society of St. Francis on the Kenosha-Illinois border when a swarm of squad cars arrived and officers unloaded with a search warrant.

"(There were) nine DNR agents and four deputy sheriffs, and they were all armed to the teeth," Schulze said.

The focus of their search was a baby fawn brought there by an Illinois family worried she had been abandoned by her mother.

"When it made a little noise, it sounded like it was laughing," Schulze said.

Schulze videotaped the fawn they named Giggles during the two weeks she was there. The Department of Natural Resources began investigating after two anonymous calls reporting a baby deer at the no-kill shelter.

The warden drafted an affidavit for the search warrant, complete with aerial photos in which he described getting himself into a position where he was able to see the fawn going in and out of the barn.

Agents told staff they came to seize the deer because Wisconsin law forbids the possession of wildlife.

"I said the deer is scheduled to go to the wildlife reserve the next day," Schulze said.

There are people out here that are not good for the animals. There was one recently who only got a slap on the wrist for cruelty to animals. She had quite a business going scamming pics of other dogs and selling poor sick animals off her more than one websites. IMO, if the money was spent on regulating these guys more than raids of this sort; maybe this wouldn’t happen.

Here is some backstory that may shed light on the situation. This looks to have been a SWATting by someone who didn't like the shelter director. Maybe even by a news reporter. I don't put anything past the "fourth estate".

This is only possible because our government at every level has gone feral and is instinctively violent at any perceived affront.

The Milgram experiment on obedience to authority figures (1961) demonstrated that people will do horrible things to other people if they are ordered to. But how much killing can you get out of people that way?

A lot more than you would ever imagine.

The percentage of your neighbors who would willingly participate in genocide would shock you.

As an board member and officer of a rural, no-kill, independent Humane Society, I can confirm that everything you say is borne out by experience. This has opened my eyes to what government really is capable of. The State refuses to accept even the concept of a “no kill” shelter for pets, and they seem to prefer euthanasia to rehoming. Most State interactions with both companion animals and wildlife seem to end in death, and they deliberately foster a mentality for killing. Our legislature keeps trying to slip through laws to facilitate more animal cruelty (like chopping off hens’ beaks and feet), unchecked puppy mills, etc. (To make it more depressing, we have a Republican majority and Governor, and still this goes on).

Hence the rise of SWATting. People know that the government will react out of proportion to the offence without bothering to substantiate the charges first.

We could go alinsky on them and flood tiplines with bogus tips. That might be the only way to get their attention. It is not as if any politicians are going to have the guts to help us out.

——Society of St. Francis-——

As I recall, they killed Jews and perpetrated the Inquisition.

Now they are trying to be God

13 law enforcement personnel from DNR and the locals involved because of one baby deer.

Maybe they have a deer overpopulation problem, but it sounds more like they have a law enforcement/government overpopulation problem if they can afford to send out 13 law enforcement personnel over a baby deer.

I believe that question was answered in the 1940s.

Or the 1930s depending on how you look at it.
