A large amount of weapons and ammunition were seized in the northern border near Syria, the Jordanian Armed Forces said in an official statement aired on the countrys official TV Thursday.
Border guards on the northern frontier near border city of Al-Ramtha confiscated large quantities of weapons, ammunition and drugs, the statement said.
The Jordanian Armed Forces, meanwhile, didnt give further details on the type of weapons that were confiscated.
The people attempting to smuggle these weapons were also arrested but their identities were kept anonymous as well.
In July, Jordans King Abdullah said the kingdom was ready to defend itself from any threat to its security from the conflict in neighboring Syria.
Jordan has held joint military exercises with the United States alongside 17 other countries. Diplomats say the exercises were aimed to send a strong message to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Meanwhile, Jordan fearing threats from the Syrian conflict, has requested Washington to leave behind a detachment of F-16s and U.S. Patriot missiles after the international exercises were over.
The Syrian conflict, which started more than two years ago to remove Assad from power, has morphed into a civil war and has destructively affected other neighboring countries such as Lebanon.
The conflict has killed more than 100,000 people, according to the United Nations.

Jordan is the only island of marginal sanity left outside Israel. I hope they can hold it together till Obama is gone.
To be fair, parts of Israel are pretty nuts, too. ;’) But the world refers to those as “Gaza” and “West Bank”.
At this point I’d be happy to swap Abdulla for Obama. Better a muslim in name only than the marxist muslim we have now but I don’t think Israel would ever forgive us.

An intriguing story.
It sounds as if the Jordanian army has confiscated the supply of weapons to the Syrian rebels. This would mean that Jordan (always the most unenthusiastic member of the anti-Syrian coalition) has changed sides.
It isn’t specified — but since Jordan *hasn’t* switched sides, it’s much more likely that these were freelancers running guns (and probably bootlegged weapons intended for the Syrian rebels) to people either intent on the overthrown of the Hashemite Kdm, or running guns to Morsi’s people in Egypt.
;’)
Jordan and Qatar have turned on Hamas. So has Egypt, for that matter.
