The Los Angeles and Chicago metropolitan areas had the most gun murders among the nations fifty most-populous metropolitan areas in 2009 and 2010 (the latest years for which data is available), according to a report released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The New Orleans metropolitan area, however, had the highest rate of gun murders, with 19 out of every 100,000 people in the area being gunned to death in 2009-2010.

But but but doesn’t Chicago have Total Gun Control???
This must be all that white on black crime Jesse and the race-baiters talk about.
I’m sure there is a trend here...just what could it be.
The city's press release was full of bragging:
With the decrease in murder, New York’s murder rate has fallen to 3.8 homicides per 100,000 residents. New York City has a far lower murder rate than other major American cities. For example:While NYC is definitely much safer now than in the past (2,245 murders in 1990!) and does better than other major U.S. cities, the NYC murder rate lags behind other countries like France and Japan.
· If New York City had the same murder rate as Washington DC, New York City would have a total of 1,100 murdered this year.
· If New York City had Chicago’s murder rate, New York City would have a total of more than 1,400 murders this year.
· If New York City had Philadelphia’s murder rate, New York City would have a total of more than 1,700 murders this year.
· If New York City had Baltimore’s murder rate, New York City would have a total of more than 2,870 murders this year.
· If New York City had Detroit’s murder rate, New York City would have a total of nearly 4,400 murders this year.
More stats: "Guns remained the leading cause of murder in New York City again this year. Of the 414 homicides so far this year, 237 were by firearms. This is 61 fewer gun related murders than last year, a decrease of 20 percent. In 2001, there were 371 gun related murders, 36 percent more than this year."
Notice the immediate rise in mid 60’s, about the time of the rabid hippie movements and racial equality. ???

I think the driver there was not so much these movements, but the Great Society programs, whose immediate effect was to drive family conditions in the direction that would create what has taken place.
Thanks for the post.
My pleasure. The charts were over at the link. I just modified the format a bit and brought them over.
Yes I agree.
And the rise of more restrictive gun laws in the aftermath of the Kennedys’ and MLK assassinations.
Black cities are dangerous places.
Thanks. I’m glad...
I’ll bite. They are all conservative strongholds with white people white people who hate Obama.

Guns don't cause murders. Murderous use of guns cause murders.
That list looks suspiciously like the list of financially failing cities recently posted here.
Hmmmmm....
Any statistic that looks at “gun murders” instead of total murders is misleading, essentially propaganda.
Only total murders count. If you reduce “gun murders” but total murders go up, you have done harm, not good.
Consider “Hospital Deaths”. You can eliminate all “hospital deaths” by eliminating hospitals, but the total number of deaths will rise considerably.
