Dave Camp will decide on Senate by January (Michigan)

Rep. David Camp (R-Mich.) will decide whether or not to run for Senate by next January.

“I always knew I was going to be on the ballot. We run every two years in the House. “I just don’t know where I’m going to be on the ballot at this point,” he told Bloomberg TV in an interview airing Friday evening. “I think certainly by January, I’ll be able to know whether I’m going to do one or the other.”

He said he was being encouraged to look at the race for the seat being vacated by Sen. Carl Levin (D). Former secretary of state Terri Lynn Land is so far the only prominent Republican in the race. Rep. Gary Peters is the likely Democratic nominee.

“It’s an important state, a big state,” Camp said. “A lot of people have urged me to take a look at it, and I think I owe them the respect of taking a serious consideration, because I think so much of the people who’ve talked to be about it.”

The House Ways & Means Committee chairman also pushed back on President Obama’s push for corporate tax reform separate from any change in individual tax rates.

“It’s really important we do both,” Camp said, arguing that the latest jobs numbers show that individual tax reform is necessary. But, he said, “I’m glad the president’s involved in the issue.”

I don’t know if Dave Camp is up to running, having recently recovered from cancer. Also, this puts Terri Lynn Land in an awkward spot. I wish that Camp would decide sooner.

I'm not in love with Land but she does appear to be trying to reach out to conservatives. I'm unsure about Camp as well. Personally I'd rather see Colbeck or Steele in the race but could vote for Land without too much pain.

I don’t see why Land as a 2 time statewide winner wouldn’t have an even shot at beating the rat.

I think that Camp could school Peters in the debates, particularly on budgetary issues. Land has won statewide, but not running on the types of issues that are important in Senate races; never served as a legislator, and is more of a blank slate, which is both good and bad. So an argument can be made for both candidates.

My ideal scenario would be for Camp to run for the Senate and prompt Paulbot Congressman Justin Amash to run as well (where Amash would lose and thus put an end his pro-Muslim, anti-Israel agenda), thus giving Land a soft landing in MI-03, which is based in her home town of Grand Rapids. After a couple of terms in Congress building her record and proving her conservative bona fides, she then can run against Stabenow in 2018.

Sounds good to me.

I wonder if Dave Camp has ever been to Camp David.
