23 Ways of Poking Fun at Libertarians
Townhall.com ^ | August 3, 2013 | Daniel J. Mitchell

Posted on 08/03/2013 6:35:31 AM PDT by Kaslin

The very first bit of anti-libertarian humor I ever posted was this clever video about the anarcho-capitalist paradise of Somalia.

I then shared two cartoons, one on libertarian ice fishing and the other showinglibertarian lifeguards.

That was followed by a very funny list of the 24 types of libertarians.

But I haven’t shared anything making fun of people like me since this “think I do” montage last year.

Thanks to Buzzfeed, however, we now have something new for our collection. They came up with “23 Libertarian Problems” and here are two of my favorites from the list.

And you assume a tide of Libertarian politicians is about to sweep the land?

I think you must have missed the memo, but the Tea Party was started on libertarian economic principles. Without them, the Democrats would still control the House.

The tea party’s largest group is social conservatives.

The libertarians and the left fight for the same America except that libertarians desire conservative economics, the problem is that you can’t get there by creating more democrat voters with your libertarian social liberalism.

Social liberalism leads to liberal voters, liberal voters do not vote for conservative economic policies.

Why haven’t I heard of Dan Mitchell before? His web site is loaded with great information.

You’re using small “l” libertarianism in an unconventional way.

I don't want to pick a nit, and I would say that the concepts are much more important than the word choices, but I do not think I am using this in an unconventional way.

I have two shelves of books devoted to Anarchism. It was, at one point, a great passion of mine. The Europeans have traditionally seen liberalism as a small government position -- the Libertarian Party of the USA has (to a large extent) a the philosophy of classical liberalism. The Europeans would further say that Anarchist take a libertarian position which is a bit more extreme than a "small government" philosophy.

That's the traditional use of the terms. As I said earlier, times change and these terms morph a little as people try to finagle their positions and appeal to the masses.

Ironically, while the conservatives and libertarians snarl at each other on this thread, our elected officials do nothing to represent either of their interests. Methinks the blame and anger is juvenile and misplaced....

i think there should be a new rule at free republic for all threads in which libertarianism or the libertarian party is discussed. can anyone guess what i’m going to propose? actually, there’s no reason for a rule, since so many already do it. this is painful to do. i feel like all of my elementary school teachers are frowning at me. how do people live like this?

So your belief is that libertarians should leave the Republican Party and The Tea Party because they are really nothing but liberal Democrats...?

Absolutely true. We have two major parties and they both support big government and less freedom. One might say “this party is better than that party”, but neither party is supporting the ideals upon which this site is focused.

New Poll: Tea Party Overwhelmingly Christian And Socially Conservative.
by JJ SUTHERLAND
October 05, 2010 3:07 PM
A new poll is out today from the Public Religion Research Institute. It covers a lot of ground, and I encourage you to go read the whole thing, but a few things popped out at me.

Mainly I was fascinated by the questions on the makeup of the Tea Party Movement, it’s the first research I’ve seen that really delves into how the members of the movement view themselves. Letting people tell you the stories they tell about themselves to themselves is usually the best route to understanding where they’re coming from.

So, first, it’s an overwhelmingly Christian group. 81% identify as Christian, and nearly half (47%) say they are part of the religious right or conservative Christian movement.

Secondly, it isn’t libertarian, it’s much more socially conservative, with 63% saying abortion should be illegal and only 18% in favor of gay marriage.

What makes you think I’m a libertarian?

Yet libertarians and the left share much, conservatism is your enemy, something that you both desire to defeat and overcome.

Don't confuse me with the libertarians. I'm an independent.

Yes, the left and libertarians agree on many things. But they also disagree on many things, and the biggest disagreement (size and power of government) will prevent them from ever working together.

The absolutists in both groups (libertarians and conservatives) undermine themselves: they are too busy fighting each other to band together and defeat the left on issues on economic and civil liberty issues.

Meanwhile, the left is able to set aside their differences and build a coalition that puts them in power to defeat conservatives on all the issues. They do it largely by demonizing conservatives over hot button issues that affect few people, but convinces them to vote against their economic self-interest.

Laugh all you want - then just try winning another national election without us.

It's a repeat of the GOP Master Strategy that lost California.

Apparently Rand Paul acolytes equate conservativism with libertinism. The two are not the same.

Um, Rand Paul is no libertine.

If you support abortion, the homosexual agenda, open borders, the rest of the radical leftism of the libertarian war against God and America, then get thee gone brother.

Good point, and that’s why the outlook is not good, regardless of the direction of the GOP. The culture is dying, or has died. The obvious and easy solution is to grasp at governmental power to try to fix it, or at least hold things steady. I don’t see that working. The culture didn’t degrade because the government allowed gay marriage, the government allowed gay marriage because the culture is diseased. I think it all has to get a lot worse before it gets better. Cheers!
