This is AP, so no quoting. Gist of article in comment below.
You drive through a state (or someone who has stolen your car LOL) and you get a bill for miles traveled over the roads in that state over and above the "road" taxes added to your gasoline use. There are bills out there to do just that.
Reminds of the situation in NC when there was a drought-- the socialist dems in the cities (key element-- the welfare whores and bums in the cities need money from the nanny state politicians who need their vote) proposed... get this: mandatory installation of water usage meters on private wells (farmers, rural people or anyone who had a well!) on privately held land. It didn't pass-- but could have and THEY thought of it-- it is their thinking. The ideal socialist answer-- take from those who "shouldn't have it" and give to those who do not deserve it or haven't earned it other than as a "constituency". And it is all just OK with the new normal drones of the hive who cannot and will not think for themselves. Socrates where are you? Diogenes?
This is a tough one because I feel there is some legitimacy in allowing a LEO, even one that shoots dogs, some opportunity to maximize the impact of his vehicles ‘beat’. He can see the plates, so can his equipment.
If recording these sightings are only checked against all legally documented infractions or warnings, then I’d tend to side on its use.
When this technology is stored and held for a long time on a ubiquitous level so that it can be used with other officers’ recorded data, then I have one damn big problem with it. Just like have with the NSA collecting every electronic bit on this planet. Don’t like or approve one damned bit.
This is a case where you’d have to actually trust local enforcement and government to follow the Constitution. You sure as hell can’t count on this at the Federal level.
It's only MegaData.....
Nothing to see here. Move along.
What if?
They decide you have a history of supporting the Tea Party, are patriotic, support the constitution, believe in private property and are a Christian. As such you are an enemy of the state.
They put out a Federal warrant for your arrest and you try to avoid capture. Would you still think is a good idea.
This line of reasoning is not that far out today. Unfortunately.
On public land one doesn’t have any reasonable expectation of privacy.OTOH,my town’s police dept has sent cars equipped with those readers onto the driveways of our condo complex...cars not visible from the street and situated on private property.I challenged a cop once regarding the constitutionality of such an illegal and warrantless search and he got really pi$$ed.I thought he was gonna take me in for obstructing justice or something until I informed him of my ability to hire a real good civil lawyer. He then radioed into the the station (I didn’t hear what was said) and then he drove off.
Georgia Ping.
If it CAN be abused, it WILL be.
I trust the Gov’t as far as I can throw my motorhome. That includes ALL its agents, btw.
And what protection is they wont be used for other purposes you don't agree with.
Let's say you want to track someone. With the data base, you simply plug in a license plate number and then see every location where that license plate has been spotted.
Try this scenario, a candidate that is challenging incumbents, wants change is tracked. He is found to be regularly parked and meeting with individuals that would not want to be known to be supporting a challenger. Or, the plate turns up in a shopping center near a bar or a massage parlor. No evidence he was in those establishments.
Police department provides the data to the challenger's political opponents. During the campaign, candidate X is frequenting massage parlors. Or, political supporter is contacted, why are you meeting with this guy. The next time you need something from city hall forget it.
Perhaps we can come up with better examples. The point is, the information can easily be used for other purposes.
You have it exactly right!
That is what my plate and stickers on my car say. No need for a plate reader, they can see it with their own eyes.
Hopefully you can, because I don't want my politicians frequenting massage parlors. If the purpose of the technology is to keep a giant database of everyone's movements, then I agree with you because it is just a big pile of rubbish. But if the purpose is to pull up warrants instantly when the computer sees the plate, then let them pull people over. If it is a bad stop the courts will shoot it down.
Yes, here in TX they will have a data overload with it.
I agree that it makes sense to help track criminals, the danger is when criminals determine who the data system is used against.
GA Ping. Thanks Pan_Yan.
Dunwoody just passed purchase of a camera & recording system with plate recognition ability to check traffic at our main park (Brook Run). Apparently there has been a fair amount of vandalism.
To my knowledge there was no discussion about what happens with the plate data collected, how long it is retained, etc. These are important questions.
The tendency is apparently to access the “offerred” federal funds to link up this data nationally-— then the mavens of IT congeal it into-— what-— staatspolizei records.
In similar fashion the “militarization” of police (one thing to hire former mil police who are trained, but not combat teams, etc) with tanks, APCs, surplus hardware— the fact is they get it they want to use it, and find easy reasons to do so. Right wing or left wing— a police state is not to be tolerated— period. And our Founders new this about the monarchic secret police of Europe (the last of which was the Tsars ohkrana— which Stalin was a member of, btw).
They had a camera at the intersection of Beaver Ruin Rd and Highway 29 for awhile but they had to take it down. I can’t remember the exact reason. Either too many people were beating it in court or it conflicts with the GA state constitution. Anyway its gone thank God.
The Park at Bethesda Church Rd in Lawrenceville has cameras all over the place but not exclusively license plate readers. I heard there is a lot of gang activity at these parks.
You’re in Gwinnett, or work there, right?
I’ve been doing a consulting gig up there. I see county cops with the camera/reader systems quite frequently when I’m out and about at lunch time.
You know, of course that you may not take that motorhome through NYC, its bridges and tunnels-— IF it has propane fuel tanks on board. Incredible.
The Stasi could wish for such control. This ‘security’ threat on the int’l. level could be dealt with quickly— all illegals- out. Search for “sleeper” agents who’ve been here a long while— then, out— get ‘em gone.
The notion of “home grown” terrorists was conceived of in the DHS white paper janet incompetano signed off on— this “risk list” was like one composed by Southern (perverts) Poverty Law Center: returning or existing retired military (of any color, but esp. whites), Christian identity movement(that is, people who go to Christian churches) and the list goes on. How far will the “paid” police agencies go to expand their budgets and their “security”... how many wannabes who will play along in this?
Weimar Germany has the Freikorps— what will form from our leftie obamaomau supporting mil vets— a leftist “un” freikorps looking for work in the depressed country, fighting illegals who should be deported. All the makings for chaos and turmoil-— from which ORDER will be made the first order— “alles es in ordnung”. But, knowledge, ours— is power, too.
