It's unknown how the "Hellfire" missile wound up in the hands of extremist.

Here we go. The fog is moving out of Benghazi.

No, these would not be hellfire missiles once white washed thru the MSM and the Whitehut press corp.

They would be some improvised deadly flying explosive device (I-D-FED)developed in Iran with the help of Russia and sold to AQ to destroy our embassies.

Of course due to the NSA spying implemented by Bush and ratcheted up by Bathtub Barry this was found out in time to save all the lives. Now the servers in Utah will be doubled in size and recorders will be put on all crappers to record number of flushes.

Now the next war can be started over in the Iranian sandbox in the coming weeks.

“So now Obama’s arming of al Qaeda extends to US Hellfire
missiles against freed people.”

Use of Hellfire missiles in Egypt requires a helicopter as a launch vehicle. Just can’t fire it willy-nilly.

The jihadists never fired a Hellfire.

This is poor reporting and wrong reporting by a media dolt that knows nothing about weapons.

Could it be a Hellfire was stolen from an armory when the MB was in power? Could be.

Could it be a stolen Hellfire’s warhead was used as an IED? Could be (and the fact the missile body is relatively intact supports this idea).

“Have the American people EVER been so ashamed
of their own Pentagon helping al Qaeda
after the 911 Atrocities?”

Please explain that comment, please provide a link.

That is a nice piece of kit. . .something the Egyptians do not have.

You mean the launch platform in the video ? Well, in this modern world, if the Swedes have it, Muslims have it.

Egypt doesn’t have it.

Muslims know how to make it because Muslims are in the Swedish armed forces. Just a launch rail to aim and point. No need for analog directional control. They caught the guys who fired it right away. Close range.

Egypt doesn’t have that piece of kit in their inventory.

Guidance is critical for that system if you hope to hit what you are aiming at, and the ballistic profile (meaning it engages in an upward flight path before coming down from above) make guidance especially important. And to disable the ballistic profile requires some pretty good knowledge of the systems electronics.

Knowledge about weapons technology, electronics, employment envelopes and guidance are key to making the Hellfire more than a simple unguided, un-aimed bottle-rocket. The video was just a simple shot that was unclear in its representation as to what it was shooting at and what, if any, guidance they were using.

No guidance = expensive and ineffective fireworks display.

Of course, you probably have much more experience with these weapons than I do so I defer to you. . .

Cheers.

That is not how it was fired. They probably had it mounted onto a truck bed. Parked the truck across the street of the building. Aimed it at the building. And fired. Luckily the warheads or tandem warheads did not go off otherwise the building would have been destroyed. Why do you think they are evacuating US embassies in the Middle East ? Because of a video ? If they can figure out how to set off the warhead, no building will be safe. Just my 2cents.

My knowledge of rockets and the like does not extend beyond the M-79 but one thing I do know is any such weapon is fungible. We give it to say Egypt, it can move on to say Yemen, Syria, Angola or the US.

I see where Bush is having Heart surgury today. I wonder if his open minded immigration policy extends to having a doctor trained in Mexico. Just a though.

There are plenty of ways to modify the $58,000 bottle rocket to make it do some serious damage to a building, but it is probably best to not give them any ideas.

“That is not how it was fired. . . They probably. . .”

Saying as fact that it was NOT fired that way but then go on to say “probably” to describe how you think it may have been shot, not to inflame, but interesting use of words to me.

I am not convinced it was shot at all. If indeed the missile body was from an alleged incident at all.

From my earlier post:

Use of Hellfire missiles in Egypt requires a helicopter as a launch vehicle. Just can’t fire it willy-nilly.

The jihadists never fired a Hellfire.

So they used an old missile to make an IED. How did it get into the building ? Did they throw it ?

All the Egyptians I know barely can lift a fork.

The point is, the body of the missile is relatively intact.

That is very telling. . .for weaponeers.

I can guess how it got there but my guess would have no fact as a basis to build on.

I know the weapon and I know its aftermath so when I say I think it might have been an IED, that “guess” is based on knowledge of the weapon.

(I am not convinced the reports are accurate. . .reporters are not to be trusted (enjoy): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2sAFHBptJE

Even if we change our pretense to ‘MB TRIED and failed to knock out a building with a Hellfire’ we need to be asking how many more they have, where they got them and how long till they scrape up the cash for a platform that delivers.

The US has been firing HELLFIREs from humvees since 91. The Navy has been firing from ship mounted launchers since before that.

Twin rail launchers that fit standard NATO hard points are part of the system and can be modified, there is no minimum forward airspeed required for launch. The missiles and launch equipment are normally found together in shipments to foreign militaries in aid programs.

Launching from a vehicle is not anything new. If they have more of these, they will figure out how to make them detonate next time.
