NYT Downplays Deadly Results of Palestinian Rock-throwing ‘Hobby’
Free Beacon ^ | 8/5/13 | staff

The front page of the Monday New York Times featured a story on a popular “hobby” among young Palestinian boys: throwing rocks at Israelis.

The Times’ Jodi Rudoren refers to the “hobby” as a game and describes it as “an act of defiance and a rite of passage” that can be seen as a caricature “of Palestinian pushback against Israel.”

Rudoren touches on the amount of jail time served by a boy caught throwing rocks, even charting the years spent in jail from members of a Palestinian family on which the article focuses. She complains of the treatment of arrested Palestinian youth during the arrest process and the difficult fight lawyers have when defending those caught.

Barely mentioned in the nearly 2,000 word article, however, is that unlike other hobbies such as stick-ball and hopscotch, throwing rocks can have deadly serious consequences.

Multiple deaths have resulted from rock-throwing incidents.

One thing I remember from “The Iliad” is how respectful the ancient Greeks were of a man throwing a large rock. They clearly saw it as a deadly and effective weapon.

They exaggerate the danger of soda pop to grotesque proportions and laugh at the danger of a rock hitting your head at high speeds.

All liberals have a cognitive disability.

Men with slings were extremely effective in battle.

David didn’t pull out a little Dennis the Menace thingy when he took on Goliath.

Liberalism literally is the suicide of Western Culture... and this is by design not by accident.

David - Goliath.

David's sling gave quite a bit more velocity to his "smooth stone".

The Palestinian "youth" seem to have embraced this same "hobby".

From your excellent link:

"Surprisingly, a good slinger hurled a stone as far and accurately as a good archer. Roman military texts recommended archery target practice at about 200 yards (183 meters). Slingers are known to hurl their projectiles even farther, as much as 440 yards (402 meters) (a quarter of a mile / 0.40 km).

As for accuracy, one ancient writer noted that the best slingers "would wound not merely the heads of their enemies, but any part of the face at which they might have aimed." Experiments demonstrate that missiles leave a sling in excess of 60 miles per hour (97 km/h).

One Roman writer noted that opponents in leather armor were in far greater danger from sling missiles than arrows. Even if the stone did not penetrate the armor, it was capable of inflicting a fatal internal injury.

Unarmored bodies were easily penetrated by sling stones. An ancient medical book included instructions for removing lead and stone sling missiles from the bodies of wounded soldiers."

So much for the NYT's evaluation of this innocent “hobby” as a game and describes it as “an act of defiance and a rite of passage”

A friend has a rock that came through his window on his piano. About three pounds. I'd call it a steel gear, but to the NYT it's a rock. In the US it's a felony everywhere, to the NYT, entertainment. Stone the Jews.

All the Jewish kids in Hebron are dead-eye shots with rocks and regularly practice against abandoned houses, but it’s so thoroughly looked down upon and discouraged by adults that I only once saw an incident of Jewish rock throwing at Arabs. The IDF immediately stepped in and chased the teenagers away, threatening dire consequences if they did it again.

Perhaps someone should rent a helicopter and fly by the NY Times’ executive offices and throw a few rocks. Everyone needs a hobby.

Hobby, game, rite of passage...okay, yeah.

As a tourist in Israel, my bus was damaged by several of these rocks thrown through the windows.

They were at least 5 inches in diameter and could easily have killed someone.

It’s typical of a leftist to make excuses for any criminal behavior of their pet groups!

Adele Chaya Biton remains in a coma from this game. Yonatan and Yehuda Palmer are dead because of it.

The writer, Jodi Rudoren, lives in Jerusalem where she is the New York Slimes bureau chief.

She has a demonstrable affinity for Palestinian terrorists and their various causes, the main one, of course, being the total destruction of Israel.

She is another of those numerous NY Slimes Jewish employees who hate their own kind.
