U.S. EPA Issues Renewable Fuel Rules (For 2013 16.55 billion gallons required)

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today issued a final rule for the amount of renewable fuels to be added to the nation’s transportation fuel supply in 2013.

The most publicized issue related to renewable fuels has been the ethanol “blend wall,” the theoretical point at which ethanol use will be surpassed by the amount of ethanol required by law. As Americans drive less, demand for gasoline falls also reducing demand for ethanol. Because blenders are required either to use the mandated amount, regardless of demand, or pay for credits for the amount they don’t use, the EPA has been granted authority by Congress to adjust the mandated levels if necessary.

The EPA ruled today that the mandated 16.55 billion gallons of renewable fuels will not be changed. The major change to the mandated levels came in the area of cellulosic ethanaol, where the 1 billion gallon statutory mandate was reduced to 6 million gallons, reflecting the reality of the situation with cellulosic ethanol production.

The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA), which represents some of the country’s largest ethanol makers, applauded the decision. The American Petroleum Institute (API) has fought the renewable fuel standard (RFS) vigorously, saying that the RFS will raise gasoline prices by 30% and cost the U.S. $770 billion in GDP by 2015.

The RFA counts among its members leading biofuels producers like Archer Daniels Midland Co. (ADM), The Andersons Inc. (ANDE), and Pacific Ethanol Inc. (PEIX). Valero Energy Corp. (VLO), Kior Corp. (KIOR), and privately held POET Inc. are not on the RFA’s membership roster.

To take some of the sting out of the blending requirements for 2013, the EPA is extending the compliance deadline for blenders until June 30th of next year.

That's the money quote in there. This nonsense will raise fuel prices.

Ethanol bad, Butanol good, bio-diesel better, market pricing best.

The EPA is an unconstitutional left wing political hack.

The hogtying of America’s free-market, Capitalist Republic continues. America will not survive another 3 years of 0bama. No way, no how. It’s on it’s last legs now, and won’t make it to 2016.

"The major change to the mandated levels came in the area of cellulosic ethanaol, where the 1 billion gallon statutory mandate was reduced to 6 million gallons, reflecting the reality of the situation with cellulosic ethanol production."

Good reason is that cellulose ethanol production is hardly above a demonstration level and nowhere near the 1 billion gallons. However the government continues subsidize this boondoggle.

My big fear is that the ethanol boondoggle and the EPA will mandate a 15% ethanol gasoline blend which they "claim" is safe to use in vehicles made since 2001. Check you owners manual folks using an ethanol blend above 10% voids your warranty. Using this crap will rot your fuel system and cause major damage to your engine.

When will the states say NO!

I wish they would!

Sadly, however, farm-belt states (that grow a lot of corn) are represented by politicians who consider the requirement to use some ethanol a wonderful thing...

Yep. The 10% cost me 500 bucks to rebuild the carburetors on my outboard engine and 50 bucks to rebuild same on my gasoline generator.

Some are saying “use premium”, but that’s no help. It is 10% also.

Others are saying to use stabilizer. I’ll try it and see if it works.

The really bad thing about farmers is that they are getting farmers addicted to an income based on an irrational government policy.

It is bound to bite them at some point in the near future.

The EPA is a lackey for the oil cartel...among other things.

I own a 1973 Dodge M-300, 440 cu. It runs weaker with the ethanol, but I’m not having problems with the fuel system. My mechanic went through it in May, and it’s clean as a whistle. I use Chevron gas. It’s more expensive, but has a very good stabilizer blended in.

I hope the stabilizer works. I don’t like throwing money away on preventable things.

I hear it attacks the plastics used in the non-auto engines. That they’re not made to withstand alcohol.

I used to have a station nearby that had ethanol free gas. Sadly they closed a while back. I always got gas for the lawn equipment there.

I hope your mechanic replaced all the rubber fuel line in that ‘73 Dodge with the newer Gates line that has the green stripe. The older type rubber fuel line will rot and leak, regardless of fuel additives.

You can buy ethanol free at your local airport.
(and it has some beneficial lead in it also!)
