How Climate Change Could Wipe Out Surfing
Care2 Make a Difference ^ | August 8, 2013 | by Kiley Kroh

Both the sport and culture of surfing are increasingly at risk due to the effects of climate change. Quite simply, surfing is reliant on healthy oceans and coasts. So as climate change drives fundamental changes — sea-level rise, ocean warming and acidification — the result could be a great readjusting, and potential loss, of the world’s surf communities.

Chad Nelsen-Wanker, environmental director for the Surfrider Foundation, a grassroots network of surfers in eighteen countries around the globe, explains that the world’s surf spots are very sensitive to change. While surfers are often the most attuned to the conditions that impact their local waves, many of the climate-related shifts are slow-moving and difficult to see. A lifelong surfer himself, Nelsen says he’s been going to the shore at Laguna Beach since 1975 and hasn’t really noticed a perceptible difference, despite what he knows is happening beneath the surface.

Yes, surfers who ride boards made from highly processed petroleum are at one with nature.

I like most surfers but these climate change zip wads need to learn to think on their own and not just run with the herd.

Water rising = more ocean = more surfing. What's the problem?

I wonder if the moon bats are aware of the Moon’s gravitational influence on tides as the Earth rotates?

I wondered the same thing. Are they not aware that tidal influence is almost solely the moon's? Temperature differentials cause subsurface thermal changes, thus changes in density and flow, but they don't cause a change in the actual tides themselves.

Tide timing has been perfected since ancient seafaring times. These AGW alarmist idiots are complete frauds and will one day be laughed into obscurity for their complete lack of credibility.

If Chad Wanker married Anthony Weiner, he would be a Weiner Wanker.

The oceans will rise from globull warming, covering more of the land. Less land means less shoreline, so fewer places to go surfing. Of course, we don’t know if that will affect the quality of surfing. That will mostly depend upon the quality of the marijuana harvest.

How Climate Change Could Wipe Out Surfing

Er, well at least it might, if in fact there were such a thing.

Global cooling, as is the more likely climate change for the immediate future, might necessitate warm furs being worn by surfers. It could get boggy.

No, because "Environmental Studies" is not in a college's Science Department, but rather in the Political Department.

It is generally at odds with true science.
