The Myth of the Mexican Work Ethic
American Thinker ^ | 08/11/2013 | Jeremy Egerer

Posted on 08/11/2013 7:55:26 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

There are two kinds of men that this article will necessarily offend. The first, and most obvious, is the kind of man who honestly believes in an exceptional Mexican work ethic -- the man who attempts to befriend or utilize the Mexican population to prove himself not to be a racist, to acquire their votes, or to unfairly associate himself with qualities belonging to others.

But the second kind of man, in my opinion, deserves to be offended far more than the rest, for, hoping to find an essay about the laziness of Mexicans, what he is actually going to find is an essay about the foolishness of white Americans.

Being half-Hispanic, I have always heard, since as far back as I can remember, that Mexicans have a superior work ethic -- that they move quickly, and do much, and complain never. I do not necessarily debate these claims concerning the migrant laborer, but if I were to assert that these characteristics belonged to Mexicans as a whole, I believe I would do both Mexicans and Americans a disfavor.

In a sense, the claim is correct: Mexicans can be said to do the jobs avoided by whites, for less pay, and at a faster pace. Anyone at least remotely familiar with agricultural labor knows that whites largely avoid it, and that they avoid it because it is too difficult for the pay given. If we begin with this premise, that the pay is not enough to attract white people into this brand of heavy labor, we begin with a very sensible observation: that what is preferable to one man is not preferable to another.

One of our family friends back home, a canadian, had an electronics warehouse in Compton CA that supplied Best Buy and Target. he’s now retired and one thing stuck to him for years in experience:

the mexicans are damn hard workers who will work for a sandwich, while the blacks are the laziest people he’s come across.

The bad thing about mexicans he’s noticed is that mexicans love free stuff and they want you to speak their language.

About 600 Mexican troops were killed in the battle. Their total number was around 1800.

Most of the defenders were Mexican citizens-Tejanos.

Reinforcements that were expected never arrived so they had to do with only about 189.

Are you serious that most of the defenders of the Alamo were Mexican Citizens?

There is also another hyposisis that bears fruit....

As in all immigrant class, the ones that come here are the most industroius and hard working of their ethnicity.....

They are the ones that want to work to better themselves
and their family.....They don’t care what it takes to do that.....

They have less options than legal workers and must be work agressive to accomplish their goal....

Granted they may not be skilled or literate....but they have desire....

I sold roofing for a while, the Mexicans were very good but the very best I saw were from Robeson and Scotland counties in North Carolina and they were of mixed ancestry with fifty percent or more Lumbee or Cherokee indian background. They could strip an old roof down to bare wood while I was deciding where was the best place to stand to watch them. They ran two nail guns on a section of roof with one man at the ridge pulling shingles from the wrapper and dealing them like cards to the two nailers as fast as he could go, back and forth from one nailer to the other. A nailer would finish one shingle and just reach out a hand and catch the next shingle as it slid to him. One of the strippers told me that the man he used to work for on his last job insisted that one stripper had to put a hundred squares of old roofing to the ground in eight hours to keep his job. The guy could do that with ease, he would start at the peak and work with TWO “D-handle” forks, one in each hand and walk down the roof to the eave, then back up to the peak and come down again. I timed him once and he put six squares on the ground in twenty minutes flat. I figured that if I had tried it I would have wound up on the ground in less than twenty seconds.

The best looking chimney flashings were done by a black man, his work was all good but he really excelled at flashings. They looked almost too perfect to have been done with hand tools.

The author mentions being “Hispanic”. In my personal experience, indigenous Mexicans are very hard working. Hispanic Mexicans (with Spanish heritage) not so much. I worked in Spain and Mexico, and the Hispanics in both counties do not have a work ethic that working-class Americans would respect.

That is booking. Best I ever did was 18 square off and new back on in 11 hours. Including clean up.

Best straight laying was 31 square in 10 hours.

All by myself with no help both times.

Yes, many became Mexican citizens before the battle. They settled in Texas which was Mexican territory and called themselves “Tejanos”.

The people who came from the US to Texas became Mexican citizens, Texas belong to Mexico. My grandfather born in 1870 in north Texas referred to those early settlers as the “old Texians”.

Many people call them Texicans with a “c” but that came from a John Wayne movie.

To: Vigilanteman; Cowboy Bob

As a blue collar worker-by choice-of Mexican/Latino ancestry, I found this-”such a difference exists between the American citizen of Mexican heritage and the desperate refugee laborer” to be a definitive statement.

One of the first things the Spanish military did upon arrival was to enslave the Native American/Indian population, and mate with quite a few of the women, beginning the Mestizo ethnic group nearly all of us new world Latinos belong to. So about one half of my ancestors enslaved the other half from the gitgo, and created a really conflicted ethnic group.

To answer Cowboy Bob, Natives/Indians did not make the best slaves, by all historical accounts-they had already been indentured by the Aztecs for awhile, and used their fall to get the hell out of Dodge, if they could, or got killed for their defiance. Those ever-resourceful Spaniards promptly bought Black slaves to do the work, starting with the Caribbean islands, and creating another conflicted, racially mixed ethnic group. Hey, at least they were consistent...

By the 1700’s, my known family had moved into what is now south/southwest Texas, along with a lot of others of Basque-and-Native ancestry-family tradition says Basques had no liking for being close to the strict caste system and harshness of the Spanish government-so they got far away to do their own thing, ranching in a remote place like they still do. So my family and I are no different from any other American whose ancestors came here to get away from oppressive rulers a few centuries ago, and have been working, supporting families and serving in the military ever since. A high percentage of all Hispanics/Latinos choose military careers...

The illegal immigrant is not someone a person of Mexican ancestry like myself can relate to at all, other than to recognize that they have committed a criminal act by sneaking over here and likely didn’t come “just to work”-like the author says, there is a vast difference between them and the native-born of us...

Fail. There is a Mexican work ethic. There is a Protestant work ethic. Yes, blacks commit more violent crimes in this country than whites.

The author is saying we should not make generalized statements. That is not a conservative viewpoint but a politically correct one.

Stating that Mexicans have a strong work ethic does not deprive a hard working Mexican of his honor, nor unfairly honor lazy ones. Saying the black community has problems with fatherlessness and laziness and criminal activity does not mean that all blacks have these problems.

Americans are spreading violence and perversion around the globe, too. It does not mean all Americans support this.

My ancestors fought with the other Texicans-the family has been in what is now South Texas since the late 1700’s, and had no love for dictators in either Mexico or Spain...

We are-but only one who fought came back-the others died in various battles and skirmishes-good thing it is a big family.

The military is still the most favored first career choice, though.

““Who’s going to pick your fruits and veggies” since white folks don’t like doing farm labor.”

Eliminate welfare, food stamps, and free medical and there will be whites lined up to take “those” jobs!

As far as I’m concerned, make your own way in life or lie down and die!

The Mexican “PEON” mentality.. is alive and well and established in Mexican culture.. Even Peons can have Peons..

Although the word means roughly “indentured servitude”.. there are degrees and variations of it... among the Mexican masses.. Many look on the word as an honor.. or even a badge in the collective HIVE...

What has a “PEON” to do with electing a givernment?.. Good Question..
Thats why Mexico has never had or ever will have an actual government.. Some MOB has always run Mexico and still does presently... Which is quite OK with the PEONS... Democracy seems logical to Mexicans (Mob Rule by mobsters)..

If you think the democrats and Obamnoids do not KNOW THAT you’re crazy.. It’s ONLY the republicans that do not know that.. Two types of Mexicans 1) PEONS and 2) Banditos.. you’’re one or the other.. OR BOTH..

They make very good democrats.. it’s the same with ALL democrats..
It’s the rare Mexican that knows what democracy “IS” and “ISN’T”..

Democracy is the road to socialism. -Karl Marx

Democracy is indispensable to socialism.
The goal of socialism is communism. -V.I. Lenin

The meaning of peace is the absence of opposition to socialism .-Karl Marx
