Four young males have been arrested after the senseless, brutal beating of a man on a late-night walk Sunday on St. Paul's East Side, police said Friday.
The victim, Ray Widstrand, 26, of St. Paul, reportedly was in critical condition at Regions Hospital with potentially fatal brain swelling....
"He's in the most difficult time right now, as far as swelling and cranial pressure. We're in that critical time," his father, Peter Widstrand, said.
According to the complaint, Widstrand was attacked when he tried to walk through a group of 30 to 50 juveniles and young adults fighting near Payne and Minnehaha avenues in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood about 11:30 p.m. Sunday.
"An innocent man was walking down the street and brutally attacked by a group of youth," said Sgt. Paul Paulos, a police spokesman. "He was out for a walk and decided to go through this group and was assaulted and knocked unconscious."
On Friday, Ramsey County prosecutors charged Issac Maiden, 19, of St. Paul with first-degree assault, first-degree aggravated robbery and crime committed for the benefit of a gang.....
Meanwhile, three juvenile males were arrested Friday, authorities said............
A witness said someone struck Widstrand in the head and knocked him to the ground ....
The second witness said the first person to hit Widstrand did it with a can in a sock.
The witness said a second man then hit and stomped on Widstrand. A third man removed his pants.
The witness said the man was hit and beaten for no reason.
When Widstrand went down, a "whole bunch of little East Side Boys" began to kick him, the complaint said.
When his pants were removed, they went through his pockets.

I am in full agreement with you. I am so indcredibly sorry for this guy. I hope that he does recover fully.
But I have to think that he maybe didn’t use the best judgement by walking thru this fight. He could have backtracked or even attempted to walk around it. By showing up in the middle of the fight (IOW, a white guy amidst a bunch of urban Amish), it was like waving a red flag in front of a bull.
Just to be clear to those of you out there who are reading my post...in no way, shape or form am I saying this kid deserved to be beaten. He didn’t.
But by not removing himself from a potantially bad situation, he dramatically increased the odds of something happening to him.
It was 31 Lutheran Johanssons fighting with 27 Catholic Svenssons! And the poor assaulted man reflected very little light.
You know without looking that up there in Minnesota that race crimes like this are beatings of black folks by white skinhead gangs.

This shows what a mistake it was for our grandfathers to give up the right to automatic weapons. In a better world the article would be about 50 “youth” bodies left in the street after attacking an old man.
I looked at a demographic map and that area is not majority black, maybe about 25-30% at most. It is actually very evenly divided between white, black, and Asian. The majority black areas are to the west of downtown. Still, there are enough to cause a problem. After all, in Portland and Seattle, whites are over 60% of the population and blacks are less than 10%. Yet black-on-white attacks are quite frequent in both places.
This shows what a mistake it was for our grandfathers to give up the right to automatic weapons.
I would like to believe our grandfathers did no such thing. An out of control Congress who chose to ignore “shall not be infringed” passed unconstitutional law that should not be obeyed that placed a tax on Machine guns. In 1986 they compounded the issue by outlawing all machine guns manufactured after 1986. The populace now is outgunned by every bureaucratic agency known to man, and the available machine guns are old, worn out, obsolete, and a finite number that will only get smaller with time. It is by design and another step in control of the populace. When one considers that in the beginning, it was criminals killing criminals that got the Congressional panties in a twist, things would have been far better had they left well enough alone but noooo.
