FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Lee County NAACP says it got approval from the state NAACP to picket Lee County over the Robert E. Lee portrait that hangs in the commission chambers.
"It's a symbol of racism and division," Lee County NAACP President James Muwakkil said in a July 9th interview.
Muwakkil sent a letter to Lee County commissioners in early July, asking them to take down the portrait, but they voted to keep it up.
So Sunday night, Muwakkil sent out an email, saying the county "proudly displays General Robert E. Lee's portrait," and that "General Lee did not believe blacks should hold any positions in government."
The email also cites the county's lack of black department heads and black contractors as more reasons the NAACP wants the portrait taken down.
Muwakkil told Fox 4 he is now brainstorming with the state NAACP President ways to move forward, which could include a sit-in at the chambers, picketing and protesting.
District Two Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass told Fox 4 he expected this reaction, especially after the Commission voted to keep the portrait.
Other than the one request from James Muwakkil, we have not had any other requests to remove it. I have had thousands of request to keep it and in support of it to keep the picture in the chambers," Pendergrass said.
A Lee County native, Pendergrass said he doesn't think the portrait represents racism.
"It's history, it's part of history of Lee County," Pendergrass said. "There's a statue of him, a portrait, a Confederate uniform on Lee Street."

Lee opposed secession but felt he had to fight for his state. Lee supported the post-war abolition of slavery and did more than any other prominent Southern leader to reconcile North and South after the War.
Yep, and Empire Way was decently prosperous in a blue-collar kinda way. It served as the main thoroughfare between Seattle and Renton, Kent, Auburn and points south. Then they renamed it mlk (jr) way and now it’s....well we all know what happens next. Normal people avoid it like the plague.

I have had ENOUGH of about 80% of the blacks in the USA.
If They see racism in any thing or anybody, well then,take a look at me...I have now become the biggest racist alive(with apologies to Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell etc).
As far as ‘division’, where does it say we must live together or get along.
If the USA and whites are so racist, why do the blacks not demand for autonomy....but I think we all know the answer(gibtz me dat)

Robert E. Lee has a long history of exemplary duty to the US. The civil war found him having to chose between home and country. To suggest that Grant or Sherman or any northern soldier was somehow not racist is stupid on its face. Likewise holding grudges about people who lived in a different time and place. On this idiot’s thinking one should remove Washington and Franklin and Jefferson and a host of other founders from the school as well

The county was named after William Rufus King who was Vice-President when the Washington Territory was created.
In 1986 a motion was introduced by Ron Sims (a black Democrat from Seattle), and Bruce Laing (a white Republican from suburban Renton) to change the namesake to Martin Luther King, Jr. No public votes or hearings were taken on the change.
On February 24, 1986, the King County Council passed Council Motion 6461 five votes to four setting forth the historical basis for the renaming of King County in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Because only the state can charter counties, this change was not made official until April 19, 2005, when Washington Governor Christine Gregoire signed Senate Bill 5332 into law.
Council member Larry Gossett shepherded the County Council to a public vote on February 27, 2006 to change the county’s logo from a royal crown to an image of King’s face. On March 12, 2007, the new logo was unveiled.

Martin Luther King Jr. visited King County for two days in November 1961 whereas William Rufus King was a longtime resident.
Also noteworthy is that then Governor Chistine Gregoire (aka Fraudoire) had her operatives steal the governor election from Republican Dino Rossi who won the first two recounts but was defeated by a handful of votes in the last hand recount where mysterious bags of lost ballots suddenly appealed from nowhere.
