Lee Co. NAACP gets go-ahead to picket county over Robert E. Lee portrait

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Lee County NAACP says it got approval from the state NAACP to picket Lee County over the Robert E. Lee portrait that hangs in the commission chambers.

"It's a symbol of racism and division," Lee County NAACP President James Muwakkil said in a July 9th interview.

Muwakkil sent a letter to Lee County commissioners in early July, asking them to take down the portrait, but they voted to keep it up.

So Sunday night, Muwakkil sent out an email, saying the county "proudly displays General Robert E. Lee's portrait," and that "General Lee did not believe blacks should hold any positions in government."

The email also cites the county's lack of black department heads and black contractors as more reasons the NAACP wants the portrait taken down.

Muwakkil told Fox 4 he is now brainstorming with the state NAACP President ways to move forward, which could include a sit-in at the chambers, picketing and protesting.

District Two Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass told Fox 4 he expected this reaction, especially after the Commission voted to keep the portrait.

Other than the one request from James Muwakkil, we have not had any other requests to remove it. I have had thousands of request to keep it and in support of it to keep the picture in the chambers," Pendergrass said.

A Lee County native, Pendergrass said he doesn't think the portrait represents racism.

"It's history, it's part of history of Lee County," Pendergrass said. "There's a statue of him, a portrait, a Confederate uniform on Lee Street."

"This place should be more like Detroit and Baltimore where there are lots of blacks in leadership positions!"

Oh, the irony, and plain stupidity of some people. Fortunately General Lee is safe from their obloquies.

It always escapes these race pimp's notice the General Lee had already freed his slaves while Grant still held those he retained through marriage when the two met at Appomattox courthouse.

Idiots.

Blacks in leadership positions isn’t the problem - its left-leaning blacks that are the root of the problems.

My understanding is the one slave that Grant ever owned, he had freed by 1859.

Actually Lee never owned the slaves at Arlington. They were the property of Mary Custis Lee, inherited from her father George W.P. Custis upon his death in October 1857.
By the terms of his will, those slaves were to be freed within 5 years of his death. The Arlington slaves gained their freedom in 1862. Grant owned one slave, obtained from Fredrick Dent, his father in law. Grant freed that slave in 1858. Julia Dent Grant had use of 4 slaves from her father. She did not actually hold legal title to them. They remained the property of Fredrick Dent until emancipated in January of 1865 when freed, as were all slaves in Missouri, by Proclamation of the Governor of Missouri.

Minor nit. Grant freed William Jones, the only slave he ever owned, in March, 1859. This was at a time when his family was under great financial stress, yet he basically gave away an asset worth more than a year’s average income at the time.

Truth or “right” is not determined by majority vote nor majority emails. That said, if Truth is not relative, why are women, encouraged often vociferously by men, killing the obvious babies in their wombs, and black women to a higher degree?

Why waste time on in-your-face-racism when the baby-lynching supported by the NAACP is killing and harming more blacks than any portrait or packed county government? Go after the real enemy - “ourselves”.

That said, the South lost and the spoils of a lost war go to the victor. Lee is persona non grata officially, no matter local folks’ fondness, just like for the Stars and Bars. Why not replace it with a portrait of King George or Adolf or Romney or McCain or Mondale?

sounds like the NAACP thinks they represent 50% of America and not just 13%.

Amazing the NAACP pickets the the representation of the very Party they are a part of; the Democrat slaver Party. The Democrats were slavers then and now; and yet the NAACP began with Republicans and are now Democrat slavers themselves.
