Concept car easy on the eyes … and wallet ($6,800 and gets 87 mpg)
The Phildelphia Business Journal ^ | August 13, 2013 | Jared Shelly

The folks from Elio Motors dropped by the Philadelphia Business Journal offices in Old City on Monday to show off their new concept car (see attached photo gallery). Small in stature and containing three wheels (two in the front, one in the back), the car costs just $6,800 and gets 87 mpg highway (49 mpg city).

Although still in the concept and fundraising stages, Elio’s top brass has been showing off the vehicle across the country – from its headquarters in Shreveport, La. to New York to Detroit. For the first time, they revealed a prototype of the car’s engine, which has not yet been seen by any other news organization (see photos.)

The company plans to eventually have showrooms and dealerships across Philadelphia and all of the top 60 markets in the United States.

But starting a car company from scratch is no easy grind....

Looks like they’re putting a low profile body on a 3 wheel spider cycle.

"So where is the 84 MPG coming from?"

Just a guess mind you, but how about an incredibly low final drive gear? (Like 0.7 to 1)

Is that a fact on the Elio? If so, would that mean shifting on mountain highways?

I would rather...

It has the wide wheels which makes it more scooter than motorcycle. Why have a motorcycle/scooter with walls? Ridiculous.

No, not a fact. I said “Just a guess...”

I have scoured the net, both Elio and technical websites. Nowhere is the final drive mentioned. In fact the only reference to gears is that you can have manual or auto five speed. (With five speeds, 5th gear is normally an overdrive.)

You couldn’t sell me one of these things unless it had a mower deck on it.

My motorcycle has a bigger motor and I think it’s too small.

Reminds me of a gokart I had as a child. Was fun if the field but on the road. No Way. A 69 VW could take it out. They used to have plans for these in PM magazine.

How many safety standards does this meet. And I’m not talking about Gov. Stds.

Neat looking little vehicle, but like the car a couple years back with the compressed air-engine, I suspect it fails what I call the “Neighbor Test.”

I have a neighbor who is 93 years old and drives a 1987 Chevy Suburban. Nice old man, but not such a great driver anymore. Any vehicle I consider getting into, I first make a mental note that at some point, I will be on the road in said vehicle the same time as my neighbor and his Suburban, or someone like him. If I feel comfortable getting in the vehicle at that point, it passes the Neighbor Test. If it doesn’t, someone else can drive it.

This was my vehicle after my 72 Chevelle had to be left in California.

 photo eighteenandfree_zpsb90e3661.jpg

It was a 125 Riva...good times...good times. Getting caught a few times without a slicker or gloves in cold weather finally brought me around. But goodness did I have fun!!!

A gallon of gas was good for 100 miles? Something like that..it has been a long time. I took it to 75 regular..80 was pegged. It still could go after that. I became very creative on carrying items home, too. Fun times.

We all go there no matter our money or vigilance. Death, the great equalizer.

true, but most people wouldn’t voluntarily go through life pre-packaged for departure

Nah, but there are more fun ways to go than that silly little fake car. It is a scooter with walls.

Who the hell wants that? Have the wind in your hair and in your face. Live not in fear.

Life is meant to be lived. Death isn’t that frightening if you believe in Jesus Christ.

*Poof* eternal...is that frightening? I suppose that takes faith. With faith all is possible.
