Rick Santorum in Iowa: The Term ‘Middle Class’ is ‘Marxism Talk’
Mediate ^ | August 13, 2013 | Matt Wilstein

Is there such thing as “class” in America? Not if you ask Rick Santorum. The once and possibly future GOP presidential candidate spoke to a Republican gathering in Lyon County, Iowa late last week and shared this piece of advice with his party: “Don’t use the term the other side uses.” That includes the “middle class.”

Santorum proceeded to tear into President Obama for constantly invoking the term “middle class” in his speeches about the economy. “Since when in America do we have classes?” Santorum asked. “Since when in America are people stuck in areas or defined places called a class? That’s Marxism talk.”

He said that every time Republicans used the term “middle class” they are “buying into” Democrats’ “rhetoric of dividing America.” Instead, Santorum insisted “there’s no class in America” and it’s a place where “everyone has the opportunity to succeed.”

Apparntly someone in the Santorum camp neglected to tell him that we’re all living in a Marxist Republic now.

The lines around the block for toilet paper should have been the give-away.

Really don’t think claiming there’s no middle class is a winning position. In fact, it opens him up for all kinds of attacks from people who say the Republicans want to destroy the middle class.

Yes, the Democratic policies ARE what is actually destroying the middle class. However, most people believe they are middle class (whether they are or not)—no matter how much Goobermint $$ they take.

Just as in the last two elections, the MSM will manuever the GOP into picking someone who is programmed to lose. McCain certainly fit the bill in 2008. I thought Romney would have done better in ‘08, but his ‘12 performance put that notion to rest. In both cases, the campaigns pulled too many punches. In contrast, the Libs NEVER pull their punches.

He was ahead of Newt Gingrich, who steadily ran third, and only stayed in the race until Santorum was eliminated.

You must be from a parallel universe.

You think? In the weeks going in to the point where Romney sewed it up, the race had Romney in first place, Santorum in second, and Newt in third.

It looks like there may be several RINOs lining up to run in the next election: Rubio, Christie, Jeb, etc.

Wouldn't it be nice this time if there was just one truly conservative candidate who could trounce all his/her RINO opponents who split the RINO vote amongst themselves?

Of course we will get the same nonsense as we got the last couple of times: just as many wingnut conservatives going against compromised RINOs.

In the end it will be one RINO vs. one wingnut and the RINO will end up as our candidate.

Cissy, you need a history lesson: and here it is: (by the way, the thing was over in Florida - Santorum only rose to second after that when nothing mattered...)

There are many definitions of “class.” What I would mean by “middle class” is not at all what Obama seems to mean; neither of us means what a 19th Century intellectual would have meant. What 18th Century American patriots would have meant is different from all three.

The GOPe might find him useful in splitting enough of the conservative primary vote to get Jeb or similar in as the designated loser for 2016. Assuming Santorum somehow became the nominee...hello Hillary (or worse). The guy just can’t seem to appeal much beyond the very religious Christian segment of the electorate. I think he’s too easy to paint as a “Bible thumping zealot” to get enough independent voters, even if the GOP rallied behind him. The Obamedia would eat him for breakfast. Not saying it’s right, but you know it’s what they will do.

Class Warfare is based on envy. A more accurate term is Class Envy.

BTW, just what does the Bible have to say about those who envy others?

He’s actually right, but this is the kind of “wonk-speak” that will go over most people’s heads.
