Meet The Dread Pirate Roberts
Forbes ^ | 8/14/2013 | Andy Greenberg

Posted on 08/15/2013 3:37:21 AM PDT by Bobalu

An entrepreneur as professionally careful as the Dread Pirate Roberts doesn’t trust instant messaging services. Forget phones or Skype. At one point during our eight-month preinterview courtship, I offer to meet him at an undisclosed location outside the United States. “Meeting in person is out of the question,” he says. “I don’t meet in person even with my closest advisors.” When I ask for his name and nationality, he’s so spooked that he refuses to answer any other questions and we lose contact for a month.

All my communications with Roberts are routed exclusively through the messaging system and forums of the website he owns and manages, the Silk Road. Accessing the site requires running the anonymity software Tor, which encrypts Web traffic and triple-bounces it among thousands of computers around the world. Like a long, blindfolded ride in the back of some guerrilla leader’s van, Tor is designed to prevent me–and anyone else–from tracking the location of Silk Road’s servers or the Dread Pirate Roberts himself. “The highest levels of government are hunting me,” says Roberts. “I can’t take any chances.”

A somewhat seedy and dark side of the internet. This is enabled by encryption and anonymity... a large part of the legitimate web may move to such a system if NSA snooping is not curtailed. Bitcoin and TOR power this excursion to the dark side. For those interested in a closer look the address in question is http://silkroadvb5piz3r.onion/ ... it is only reachable from within the TOR system. A short intro is available here http://silkroaddrugs.org/

Roberts also has a political agenda: He sees himself not just as an enabler of street-corner pushers but also as a radical libertarian revolutionary

Losertarian.

Yup, I’m no fan of the war-on-drugs but I could never profit by facilitating the use of them... I’d find it impossible to either sleep well or enjoy the ill-gotten gains.

I’d also never sell booze or cigarettes.

I am actually sick of and do not understand the intense focus on illegal drugs when we have killers running around free blowing little kids to death

I totally agree with you, he is not helping humanity with his “business”

but I guess someone could use Tor and all that kind of thing to sell Bibles where they are illegal

Precisely, and you could make a strong point that the Kardashians aren't helping humanity either.

no, the Kardashians are totally narcissistic, just entertainment, though, fairly benign

Did anyone actually see Orlin J Grabbe’s body? It seems he is alive and well and at Silk Road.

Drugs are entertainment too aren't they? The problem is that people take them and what they do to get them.

You are pointing out that the Kardashians are just entertainment, but the problem is that people emulate them and scew their own sense of normality.

And here I thought that someone found the real goods on Traitor Roberts (a Pirate seizing the Constitution).

Alcohol was in the same class, banned by Prohibition (legally so...unlike 'drugs'), and see what transpired between the lawful/unlawful years.

What the author may have missed is that Dread Pirate Roberts^TM was not merely one person, but a franchise resold to wouldbe outlaws in need of a intimidating facade to hide behind. It is possible that the author may have been communicating with a number of cyber outlaws, who were punking him, then handing him off to the next in line to have fun with a reporter.

My other theory is that TOR and Bitcoin are actually NSA honey pot traps designed to entrap those that are attempting to hide illegal and/or terrorist communications and money laundering. But I wouldn’t shed a tear if it were true.

That is the system of the beast. The only people who will object to it will be tax dodgers, drug dealers, career criminals, and christians.

Rev 13:16,17
16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name
