August is usually the time of year when businesses on Martha's Vineyard make enough money to see them through the cold, tourist-free winter. But with the president and his family on the Massachusetts island, road closures are detouring visitors and their dollars away from towns near the Obamas' vacation home.
Writing about the town of West Tisbury, the Vineyard Gazette reported that 'the traffic change will keep people away from the village center at the very height of summer.'
'August is our make it or break it month,' Vineyard Artisans Festivals manager Andrea Rogers told the local newspaper, 'So this is the worst possible time of the year to block access. It impacts a lot of people.'
'Were really in a bad position at a critical time of year ... were trying to survive the winter.'
Obama's chosen week away from the White House overlaps with some of the Martha's Vineyard events that attract the most summer tourists, including fireworks nights and an annual agricultural fair.
Many island businesses rely on those summer-ending celebrations to make ends meet.
Gas station co-owner Patrick Jenkinson told The Martha's Vineyard Times that his business has come to 'really rely on this third week in August, especially Fair week.'
'We do as much business in that one week as we do in three weeks in February. But we're way down from what we usually get in sales, more than 15 to 20 percent.'

Choking off business! he couldn’t be happier!
Let the liberals choke.
Just Obama doing his part for the war on small business owners.
Why doesn’t Obama go to Camp David rather than mess up the lives of those in West Tisbury?
Elections have consequences.
Excellent. What was the voting % turnout in ‘12?
Couldn’t happen to a better group of people!
I hope every Obama voter on the Vineyard goes broke because of Obama’s visit.
They’d vote for him again...
Democrats never seem to have any houses of their own worth visiting.
The Bush’s had Crawford and Kennebunkport, Reagan had his ranch. And even Carter had his farm.
What is it with these modern liberals who don’t own a house or land to go to? I live in MA and yeah it’s beautiful here right now but geez!
Because that would be a demonstration of caring about people.
Couldnt happen to nicer Obama voters...
If they didnt vote for Barry, why arent they protesting ???
LMAO right there with ya! They OWN him. I have been there
3-4 times, as I had a boyfriend whose family lived there.
A more smug group(the family and islanders in general) you
would be hard pressed to find. ENJOY!!
Everyone complaining probably voted for him.
I’d like to say I’m sorry for the Vineyard denizens, but they did all they could to bring the horror of the Mahdi to us, so i mourn for them with the smallest of violins. Now, if they’d stage an appropriate rodeo with a clown I’d choose . . .
Schadenfreude! ;).Yo gets what yo asks for.
‘We’ve started to lay a new foundation for a stronger, more durable America the kind of economic growth thats broad-based, the foundation required to make this century another American century.”
In WHAT delusional universe is this true?
He’s a pest where ever he goes.
Hey, they voted for him so they can have him.
They don't go to Camp David because Moo hates it there. She and the girls have been back to Ayers' neighborhood once in 5 years years but hussein hasn't stepped one inch inside the neighborhood. Interestingly, their name isn't on the deed and property taxes are being paid by an attorney who's name is listed along with a college professor who lives in the guest house.
The Obama’s have labeled Camp David “tacky”, and beneath them.
Premier Obozo has found yet another way to destroy jobs.
Say what you will, he is consistent.
Cry me a river. No doubt most, if not all these business owners voted for Obama. Now they can suffer the consequences of electing an insufferable narcissist.
I don’t think that Obama will be welcome on Nantucket next year. There were already complaints before he arrived. Nantucket residents might be very liberal, but they are also wealthy and like their vacations to be a real vacation. They aren’t groupies.
Dukes County (inclues Martha's Vineyard) voted 60.8% for Obama in 2012.
YES!!! HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! It’s JUST what those Lefties deserve!!
It couldn’t happen to a better community. Go broke you morons!
Sorry about all that, but his presence at the White House was killin’ the fish.
Their homes are ‘beards’, like their spouses, children and pets.
Think of Denocrat pol’s as itinerant salesmen: ‘drummers’:
If not for their props, samples & little bottles of snake-oil, they would be road bums.
Gypsies, tramps and thieves. SEE: ‘Actors.’
“Why doesnt Obama go to Camp David...”
Not trendy or up-scale. No chance to see and be seen.
Well, yeah . . . but he’s the King!
Hey, it’s Martha’s Vineyard, that’s where the super Progressives live and vacation. They will just have to forgo a little steak and lobster this year for the good of the collective and the Great Leader.
“make enough money to see them through the cold, tourist-free winter.”
Awww, poor things-pardon my schadenfreude, but here in the snowbird/tourist area where I live, the last four winters have been cold and tourist free-and over half of our businesses have gone broke-thanks to the high gas prices and snowbirds with no money to come south for the winter.
Let the liberals of Martha’s Vineyard eat ground beef and canned tuna instead of lobster and steak for awhile because Obama descended on them like some medieval king on a progress-I hope his entourage eats them out of house and home...
Yeppir. Dunno about ‘12, but in ‘08, they voted 75% Democrat, 25% Republican, & 2% Other.
They may be a bit on the rayciss side, too. 95.7% White alone, 1.6% Mixed, .7% Hispanic, & .6 Black. You’d think they’d get over their “White Privilege” & welcome the diversity.
