As I recall Kerry was only in Vietnam for 4 months, just long enough to get tour credit, and was “injured” 3 times during that, probably his “injuries” had him on limited duty for weeks
That and the fact he was a JR officer and had handlers above him and probably a competent enlisted crew that really ran the boat

The reason you feel confused is because you assume Kerry is trying to advance the interests of the American people. If you assume he and his superiors are traitors with a different agenda, then it all makes sense.
