BuzzFeed's Steve Friess thinks he has a real scoop on his hands. The NRA has been building a database, and that's hypocritical because they oppose the government doing so.

Even if they the intent and purpose would be on two different ends of the spectrum

OMG! You mean the NRA has a list of it’s members, and those people probably are gun owners!?!
Somebody please explain to Steve that many counties refuse to share their CCW data with anybody!
Steve also seems ignorant of the fact that many states and jurisdictions don’t have a requirement to register firearms.
No doubt the NRA has a database - of those folks who are members.
And I’ll trust the NRA far, far, FAR more than I trust congresscritters, or the Obamadork.
That’s far, far, FAR more.
I read a few of the comments at your link but they made my head hurt...
***OMG! You mean the NRA has a list of its members, and those people probably are gun owners!?!***
Forty years ago I read the ravings of an anti-gunner who said the best way to confiscate unregistered guns was to seize the membership lists of the NRA.
Little did he know...
I know a number of people who are NRA members but who have never owned a gun and who never will own one.
They know that the Second Amendment is important.
And some of them are little old church ladies. You would never guess that they were members.
My cat used to be an NRA member. Seriously - I was curious as to whether their mailing list was ever sold or shared, so I did that as a test. No magazine trial subscriptions or other questionable mailings were ever sent to the cat, so the NRA is probably more leak-proof than the DOD.
There are lots and lots of activities that private enterprises are allowed to do that the government should not be involved in.
YOU ARE ON A LIST.
The NRA does need a “gun controller” registry.
A powerful weapon whose purpose is to map gun controllers, their connections with each other, their financial supporters, and if they claim to own guns or not.
The existence of such a registry is a counter-threat, one that should be made when in the future, some pro gun control organization again threatens to map gun owners. In that situation, only when the personal information of the people responsible for the gun owner map was made known, did they take down their map.
That is, they liked to threaten, not be threatened.
And it is better to be able to threaten, and not threaten, than to need to threaten, and not be able.
“The NRA Does Not Have a National Gun Registry”
If the NRA has a National Gun registry then the NY Times has a National Communist Registry.
and by buying lists of attendees of gun shows,
Who put their names on those kinds of lists?
Has anyone ever been to a gun show that did this?
That part of the story sounded like a load of barrack to me (pardon my filthy language there)
The purpose of such a claim is to reduce the membership in the NRA.
The logical conclusion of this ridiculous article is that the government is entitled to every list in existence...
He basically says: “You trust XXX with the list but you don’t trust the government? That’s crazy!”
Why not apply that logic to the New York Times’ and Washington Post’s subscriber lists; every credit card company’s customer list; every cable, satellite TV, and ISP sub list; etc. After all, if you trust some private organization which follows its own self-serving interests, why wouldn’t you trust our beneficent government.
I was a member long before I started stocking up.
I’m absolutely sure that I am on the Paranoid List.
