According to a declassified order from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, as of 2011, the US National Security Agency was "acquiring" more than 250 million "internet communications" each year under Section 702 of the FISA Amendments Act (FAA) — the statute that allows the NSA to collect the content of internet communications. The order states that the "vast majority" of these communications were obtained from internet service providers under PRISM, and that only nine percent of of the total internet communications acquired by the NSA were part of its "upstream" collection practices, which pull data directly from telecommunications cables.

The order is set to be declassified today following a FOIA request from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and was originally disseminated by The Washington Post.

Use an operating system that’s “secure by default,” and use a VPN host. They’ll still check you out. But if you’re an American, legal resident or ally with a clean history and nothing do to with foreign enemies, they’ll leave you in privacy. I’m not stating any agreement with current policies, but there’s a tip to use or not.

There’s been much about federal government offices snooping and intruding on privacy. How many of you are more concerned about local government/business/criminal violations of privacy and other criminals using the Net to look for money to steal? Something to consider. There are all kinds of crooks out there.

...there are ostriches out there who still tell me to my face, “Well if you’re not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about”.

I think there's an element of truth in that, Old Sarge: being concerned about all-devouring surveillance is proof positive you're anti-regime, so of course you need to be watched.

To “see VPN tunnels” is to see nothing of value. It’s irrelevant. The author of that piece generalized and was incorrect. The content was FUD. Anyone with a positive interest in privacy should study computer and network security.
