Nevada could face suit for dumping patients in California (Greyhound therapy)
SF Gate ^ | 8/20/13 | John Coté

San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera is demanding that Nevada reimburse California cities and counties for treatment of about 500 indigent psychiatric patients who were given one-way bus tickets to the Golden State in recent years.

Those costs include about $500,000 that Herrera says San Francisco spent on medical care, housing and other aid for 20 people shipped here in a practice sometimes called Greyhound therapy.

Sure, as soon as they reimburse Nevada for ruining our air quality all summer long from endless fires caused from piss poor forest management. The air in northern Nevada gets much much worse than LA ever did in the early 70’s.

>>Sure, as soon as they reimburse Nevada for ruining our air quality all summer long<<

California bused bad air into Nevada and then left it to be institutionalized at taxpayer expense?

Who knew?

It just gets better and better in the article:

The practice, sometimes referred to as patient dumping or Greyhound therapy, has long been rumored as a way for other jurisdictions to transfer their mental health or homeless problems to more liberal enclaves like San Francisco. Herrera said there now is evidence to back that up.

"I don't think there is any doubt that it occurred in this case," he said. "Here you have a very well-documented case of a state-sanctioned patient dumping scheme."

San Francisco has a program where transients are given bus tickets, but city officials say it is much more comprehensive and beneficial because it verifies the bus ticket recipient has a family member or friend at the destination willing to offer a place to stay and ongoing support. The program, Homeward Bound, also ensures the bus riders are sober and medically stable enough to travel by themselves, city officials said.

Thou shalt not use our own programs against us; for we are the power!

Greyhound therapy

That sounds like a great idea. I'll tell Gov LePage immediately.

St. Pete, Fl. was trying to rehabilitate the downtown by inducing people to open trendy little shops and restaurants. But the homeless were running off the customers. You can chase them off a mall’s property because that’s private property. But you can’t chase them off the city street. (Where would you go; mall where it’s safe, or trendy city shop where a crazy with snot hanging out of his nose will literally bar you from getting to your car until you give him money?) So, the St. Pete police would arrest the homeless and take them WAY south of the city to the booking facility. There, they’d “discover” they didn’t have charges to hold them. So, they’d let them go. It was a shorter walk to Clearwater than back to St. Pete. So, the homeless were gradually (pretty quickly, actually) moved to Clearwater. Clearwater was suing when I left so I don’t know how it worked out. But last time I was in St. Pete it had miraculously rejuvenated. I saw no homeless, but I did see an awesome police presence. A shop keeper told me the police were pretty quick to run them off, but the homeless still hassled both shopkeepers and patrons.
