Skip to comments.Nevada could face suit for dumping patients in California (Greyhound therapy)
Posted on 08/21/2013 3:27:57 PM PDT by Libloather
San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera is demanding that Nevada reimburse California cities and counties for treatment of about 500 indigent psychiatric patients who were given one-way bus tickets to the Golden State in recent years.
Those costs include about $500,000 that Herrera says San Francisco spent on medical care, housing and other aid for 20 people shipped here in a practice sometimes called Greyhound therapy.

Sure, as soon as they reimburse Nevada for ruining our air quality all summer long from endless fires caused from piss poor forest management. The air in northern Nevada gets much much worse than LA ever did in the early 70’s.
Why were they straight? .......
Why were they straight? .......
We call the ambulance “Southwest Airlines” in NM.
>>Sure, as soon as they reimburse Nevada for ruining our air quality all summer long<<
California bused bad air into Nevada and then left it to be institutionalized at taxpayer expense?
aren’t they a ‘sanctuary city’?
The practice, sometimes referred to as patient dumping or Greyhound therapy, has long been rumored as a way for other jurisdictions to transfer their mental health or homeless problems to more liberal enclaves like San Francisco. Herrera said there now is evidence to back that up.
"I don't think there is any doubt that it occurred in this case," he said. "Here you have a very well-documented case of a state-sanctioned patient dumping scheme."
San Francisco has a program where transients are given bus tickets, but city officials say it is much more comprehensive and beneficial because it verifies the bus ticket recipient has a family member or friend at the destination willing to offer a place to stay and ongoing support. The program, Homeward Bound, also ensures the bus riders are sober and medically stable enough to travel by themselves, city officials said.
Thou shalt not use our own programs against us; for we are the power!
If they were to concern how much they spend on out of state patients. Too bad San Francisco is NOT concern how much they spend for out of the country citizen...say like ILLEGALS!
That sounds like a great idea. I'll tell Gov LePage immediately.
Now that’s funny and brilliant
Maybe they can talk to Moochelle. She is an expert at dumping patients.
This is before California puts them on a plane to Hawaii.
They would fit right in on the buses too.
Not to mention California.
St. Pete, Fl. was trying to rehabilitate the downtown by inducing people to open trendy little shops and restaurants. But the homeless were running off the customers. You can chase them off a mall’s property because that’s private property. But you can’t chase them off the city street. (Where would you go; mall where it’s safe, or trendy city shop where a crazy with snot hanging out of his nose will literally bar you from getting to your car until you give him money?) So, the St. Pete police would arrest the homeless and take them WAY south of the city to the booking facility. There, they’d “discover” they didn’t have charges to hold them. So, they’d let them go. It was a shorter walk to Clearwater than back to St. Pete. So, the homeless were gradually (pretty quickly, actually) moved to Clearwater. Clearwater was suing when I left so I don’t know how it worked out. But last time I was in St. Pete it had miraculously rejuvenated. I saw no homeless, but I did see an awesome police presence. A shop keeper told me the police were pretty quick to run them off, but the homeless still hassled both shopkeepers and patrons.
” Undocumented” psychos!
So if a US state sends legal US citizens to California, its a crime because they get California benefits.
But if Mexico sends illegals across the border to get California benefits, the libs welcome them.
Nevada should tell them they’ll pay as soon as Mexico does.

lawlessness rules the day
If not California, then where?
Shouldn’t the mentally ill be where their kind rule?
In that picture, who are volunteers and who are committed?
Hint: Jack has just found out that he's committed.
CA also bussed many democratic voters into NV
California is happy to take Mexico’s castoffs but draws the line when Nevada sends theirs to join the party!
“Thank God And Greyhound”
So the arguement is that it is an actionable offense to provide transportation to someone who wants to partake in a certain city/state’s welfare programs? Does that mean that Texas can sue Louisiana for every Katrician that arrived?
If they’re Californians then they were not Nevada’s problem.
That’s funny because in Wyoming we have a seasonal program called “For the love of God and all that is Holy, IT’S COLD!” that chases the homeless off to Florida every winter.
I’m guessing you don’t have one of those in Florida.
Peanuts. Years ago, I listened to Savage for a while.
His SF stories were always illuminating. One of which was about one bum that had cost the taxpayers about $80,000 for ambulance/medical care so far that year, and it was only September.
I love all these caring liberals fighting between themselves across state lines.
Does the Mann Act apply?
When Ralph Klein cleaned up Alberta, he cut welfare payments in half and provided one-way Greyhound tickets to Victoria, BC for all welfare recipients who wanted one! (British Columbia had the highest welfare payments in Canada.) Good plan!
There is a reason that Canadians call BC ‘British California’!
Our most prominent leftist politicians were born somewhere else. I've long ago given up hope they will ever leave.
California does it to us. We're just sending their felons and criminally insane homeless people back to where they came from.
Nevada's prisons and jails are full of Californian jailbirds. When they're released, they need to go back to wherever the hell they came from.
Besides, what nerve California has in saying we're dumping their 'homeless' population on them when they're the ones renting prison space in Nevada to alleviate pressure on California's overflowing prison population -- an overcrowding problem that a Federal judge has ruled is unconstitutional, in fact.
You can't just drive your mentally-ill criminal population to Nevada and then pretend they're Nevadans. Sorry, but they'll be coming home to San Francisco on a Greyhound bus, thank you very much.
This goes on all the time between the big cities in the West.
They call it Indigent Airlines or Trans Homeless America.
>>CA also bussed many democratic voters into NV<<
Which State Agency did that?
>>You can’t just drive your mentally-ill criminal population to Nevada and then pretend they’re Nevadans.<<
How could you tell?
This guy's lawsuit asks that Nevada verify that the loonies they're sending to CA are indeed from there or at least have family there before putting them on a bus.
Apparently they aren't doing that now. And that a bit different than a thug from california winding up in a Nevada jail.
Yes isn’t that strange. Don’t care how much you spend on Mexican Nationals but bitch about Americans. Wonder what the ratio of Federal taxes paid by Californians as opposed to how much of other states money they consume? It would be interesting to know. Besides I thought thats what California was, a statewide mental ward. I wouldn’t think they would have noticed.
The county jail and Clearwater is north of St.Pete.
I've been reading that the majority of these alleged mentally-ill patients are criminal defendants ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluations and have the last verifiable known address in California -- mostly in Los Angeles, in fact. Even SFGate.com's own previous stories on this 'Greyhound Therapy' controversy going back almost two years say so. We're talking 138 former patients from this NV hospital being bused off, and less that 20% of them were sent to SF. The rest went to LA.
If a California-resident criminal comes to Las Vegas, commits a crime, is ordered into a psychiatric hospital that is otherwise very much like jail, once they're released they go back wherever they came from.
As a former ten-plus year resident of San Francisco, I'm bewildered by San Francisco's motion that the homeless should 'Go Home'. Well, fair enough; they ARE going home.
"Well, Mr. Lunatic, you've served your 22 months for selling your psychiatric drugs at McCarran park in North Las Vegas. So, where do you want a bus ticket to? You're not staying here."
"Well, I grew up in LA, man..."
"Oh? You mean you're not actually from the dusty cowpoke town of Yerington NV, but Los Angeles"
"What? Yerington? Hell no, man. I'm from Pomona CA!"
"Alright, here's your ticket to Pomona CA. Off you go, and remember to behave!"
So what's the problem? I, for one, WELCOME an investigation and a lawsuit from San Francisco.
Hot tip: Most of Nevada's prison and lunatic population is Californian. From OJ Simpson on down. They're not ours just because they hitchhiked here from San Bernardino and found a cardboard box off the 'Strip somewhere to smoke black tar heroin in when they got arrested by LV Metro PD.
I thought SF was a “sanctuary city” ... how could they possibly turn away the homeless, the queer, the illegal, the mentally ill or any other Progressive?
Out animal shelters are overcrowded here in Arizona. Hey, I wonder . . .
Millions of illegals are on the CA Govt dole of some sort. Yet, they complain about a few hundred mental cases. When is CA going to pay back legal CA
Citizens, for the billions of dollars they have spent on illegals?
Isn’t that pretty much what Mexico is doing to the United States?
