North Korea Has a Serious Crystal Meth Problem

Aug 20, 2013

We've known about North Korea's practice of selling state-manufactured, high quality meth in foreign countries, typically China, for at least two years, but now it seems the drug is sweeping the country. A new report in North Korea Review, highlighted today by the Wall Street Journal, is titled "A New Face of North Korean Drug Use: Upsurge in Methamphetamine Abuse Across the Northern Areas of North Korea," and alleges that meth has gone from the state's factories to smaller, independent "underground laboratories and 'home kitchens.'" The drug is now prevalent in the Northern areas of the country. One of the study's authors, Kim Seok-hyang, told The Journal, "Almost every adult in that area (of North Korea) has experienced using ice and not just once … I estimate that at least 40 percent to 50 percent are seriously addicted to the drug."

Paranoia overtakes amphetamine users at some point. Not good when there are nuclear weapons involved. The paranoia serves the government well if it’s people are the ones suffering the effects. But if the government officials are meth heads, Ruh-roh!

Hmmm! I wonder whether this means amphetamines are the opiate of the vanguard of the revolution.

It would be nice if we had a CIA who could actually assess the extent of this problem. But they are too busy engaging in Muslim outreach.

True story. I was working in Japan between the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union. One day our company gets a call from the SU commercial attache's office in the Shinagawa office. Since our group is in charge of new business development, my boss and I accept their invitation to go over and check things out.

The stuff that we saw was a real eye-opener: an expensive building in one of the most expensive areas of Tokyo almost devoid of furniture (they were selling it), two days of riding around the city with a couple of their senior officers and limo driver to show them our operations and what type of things we sold and might be interested in importing from the SU.

The biggest one was that the senior officials were openly critical of their leadership and telling us big changes were coming. I even made a phone call to the U.S. Embassy to tell them what I heard. They thanked me and assured me the situation was under control.

The news making total collapse happened less than two months later. People now forget how smoothly the Bush Administration handled it because they had a functioning intelligence service which cultivated a LOT of contacts on the ground. I even have a sneaking suspicion that the Soviet officials who called our company got our name from the U.S. Embassy. Of course, I can't prove it.

Same thing is happening today with cheap heroin from Afghanistan. Heroin abuse is an epidemic among our youth. Every American kid who OD’s on heroin is another casualty in this war, IMO.

That was my thought as well. Meth suppressed apetite, so if you can’t get food, it’s probably a very tempting drug.

Distribution of this meth is a large problem for the entire Pac Rim area.
In many areas it has followed the same well established networks long used for heroin distribution.

Must be those well established distribution network laid by large crime syndicates such as Triads and Yakuza.
