Republicans agree on one thing: They want their party to change.
A new Pew Research Center study shows 65 percent say their party needs to address major problems to compete in future presidential elections, while 59 percent say it needs to reconsider some of its core positions.
But just exactly what kind of changes they want has been a little harder to pin down. As weve noted before, displeasure with party leadership is pretty universal, from the most conservative Republicans to the most moderate ones.
If anything, Republicans want their party to be more conservative, the Pew poll finds.
Given the choice between a more moderate course and a more conservative one, 54 percent choose a more conservative one, while 41 percent choose moderation.
And asked about whether their party has compromised too much, too little or just the right amount, Republicans split into three pretty equal camps. Just 29 percent say it hasnt compromised enough.

“from the most conservative Republicans to the most moderate ones”
WaPo can’t bring itself to tell the truth: “moderate = LIBERAL
The article’s premise and wording is another example of leftist propaganda.
It’s the GOP that has changed in recent years, led by a few RINOs in lead, not the base. The GOP’s base is, if anything, slightly less conservative than it was in decades past, but the party leadership has been trying to steer HARD LEFT for far too long and too many people that formerly identified as Republican voters are throwing down the gauntlet and demanding a return to the basic principles that this nation was founded upon.
Conservatism by degrees is a strange concoction, and it’s hardly a wonder why it confuses people.
Most Conservatives that I’ve talked to are registering as Independents because of their utter disgust with the gonad-less, spineless chickens in Congress led by Boner and Miss Mitch who, hopefully, will be sent home in 2014.
Democrats are Law-Less because Republican “leaders” re BALL-LESS!!!
The Lion of Judah tells us... I got spiritual “balls” for ya... c’mon and get them....
The GOP is a lot more liberal than it was, the Democrats are out and out commies now
The GOP should start its change by replacing the current Weeper of the House with a real conservative who spends less time crying and more time opposing Obama
And I wonder what the other HALF of the base, those Conservatives who have already left in disgust would say....
Or, He has the balls... I’m just the messenger! (I’ve gotten misread before when I use the forthtelling prophetic voice. It ain’t HTRN that’s the source of this stuff. HTRN is just passing on the message.)
Well, there’s nothing wrong with weeping in its place. But I do get the impression from what of Boehner I know, that he is more a complainer than a go-getter. That feeds the devil.
Re the 41% claimed to desire “moderation”.....To my mind, the Republican (non) leadership has been drifting rudderlessly to the left for so long, carried by anti-American ‘Rat winds, that the party would have to tack 45° Starboard just to RETURN to some semblance of “moderation”.
An additional 15° to Starboard would get us to a heading that’s close to where we were with Ronaldus Magnus. Under Reagan the U.S. was NOWHERE NEAR being hard or hidebound. THAT was just easygoing, free enterprise, live and let live, middle of the road Conservative government.
The lefties had a cow over it, but it was much like “Give ‘em Hell” Harry Truman once said....paraphrased....”They accuse me of giving’em hell. I don’t give ‘em hell; I just tell ‘em the truth and they THINK it’s hell!”
I disagreed with some things HST did, too....but the likes of Carter, Clinton and Obama aren’t qualified to carry his jockstrap!
They should have asked ‘do you want the Republican party to continue being more like the Democratic party with its open tent and leftward direction?’
But, the GOP-E have no interest in what the sheeple think or want. They will continue on the same path and hope the next election will turn out differently.
No ... we want it to change BACK.
I’m tired of hearing the myth that the GOP has moved further right and the Dems haven’t changed over the years. It’s BS. The Dems have moved to the extreme left and the GOP has moved toward center. It’s time to move it back right.
Is that real? Where did that happen?
When they nominated Bob Dole.
Too late. I’m no longer Republican. Screw them. I am a man without a political party until there is a separate Conservative party with a Conservative platform who nominates conservatives to office.
