POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- A Poughkeepsie man has been arrested and charged with killing Fannie Gumbinger, 99, in her home this past week.
Poughkeepsie City Police said Tyrek Rogers, 20, was arrested at 11 p.m. Friday and charged with first-degree murder and first-degree burglary in connection with the death of the elderly woman, who was found in her home at 22 Underhill Ave. Wednesday morning.
Police said as a result of the investigation, Rogers has also been identified as a suspect in several recent burglaries in the city, including a Lockerman Avenue break-in that occurred on Wednesday, Aug. 21.
Additional details in the case were expected to be released by authorities on Monday.
Poughkeepsie police Detective Lt. Edward Freer said an autopsy Thursday determined Gumbinger died of multiple injuries in the home where she’d lived alone since her husband died in 2007. Her body was found Wednesday morning after a caretaker called authorities to report suspicions something was wrong at the house.
Freer said 911 dispatch received a call Wednesday at about 7 a.m. from Gumbinger’s caretaker, who reported suspicious circumstances at the home that alarmed her and caused her to call police.
He said responding officers found Gumbinger dead inside.
A neighbor, Jane Bunt, of 16 Underhill Ave., who said she has lived in the neighborhood for nearly 38 years, described the neighborhood as always “peaceful.” She said that, until now, the only crime-related concerns were related to car break-ins. She said neighbors had been “apprehensive” since the homicide report.
