Among the few blessings of the worst recession in seven decades, you might count these:
A sharp drop in drunken driving deaths in hard-drinking Wisconsin, and a pronounced downturn in arrests for driving under the influence.
After basically rising from the mid-1990s through 2007, fatalities in traffic crashes where at least one driver was drunk plunged by a remarkable 35% in 2008.
It wasn't a statistical blip. The annual death counts since then have remained at the new, much-lower levels. Had the pre-recession trend line continued, hundreds more Wisconsin residents arguably would have died in drunken driving crashes over the last five years. Most probably would have been the drunk drivers themselves.
