“20,000 troops wont go very far in a country the size of the US. I guess the idea is to have a show of force to put the fear into people thinking about starting more unrest?”
I wonder if they will send all 20,000 troops to Texas?

Driving a couple thousand miles of I 80 the last week, there were handfuls of Janets MRAPs fresh from the factory, being hauled on flatbed trucks. I wondered where they were going. Saw a report on FOX about a week ago showing an Army base out west (maybe in California) where the government is storing some of the equipment that is being returned from the mideast or was manufactured but not needed.
They said there were 35,000 acres full of equipment and showed some shots. At 640 acres to a square, the 35,000 acres is equal to almost 55 square miles.
There are rows and rows of MRAPs, Abrams tanks, trucks, etc. I believe I heard that there are several billion dollars worth of hardware there and not needed.
The part that is heartbreaking is the report that most of the equipment in Afghanistan is being destroyed and abandoned right there because of the huge transportation costs.
And that is only

20,000 troops wont go very far in a country the size of the US. All they have to do is cut off the utilities, the people in the big cities will self destruct.

Dont have to. Look at the shelter in place after the Boston bombing. On the other hand they did shoot of 35 or 40 thousand rounds and didn't kill one bad guy, or good guy either for that matter.

how do the troops get paid, and with what? C-Rations worked in WW II, and they were glad to get them.

Remember not long ago army choppers were flying over major cities with troops roping down, including here in Houston? And didn’t warn the local cops or news outlets. Just practicing for what’s to come.
And don’t think the military or local cops will be on the side of the people.

All they have to do is cut off the utilities, the people in the big cities will self destruct. Won't happen in Texas. We've got our own grid, and we aim to keep it up and running.

the Pentagon has gone and created a force consisting of 20,000 troops whose sole purpose is to be available for civil unrest and catastrophesThese troops better be for an advisory and guidance role, because I count 400 per state. Not enough to secure a small city.

A huge solar flare or EMP burst will knock out communications systems for a long time, and how long do you think it will take for those who are dependent on EBT cards to riot for food? History teaches us that, regarding the Gibsmedats, we will have only HOURS.
1965 - Los Angeles - the arrest of a young black man in Watts incites a crowd, which spawns a riot, within one hour of the arrest;
1968 - across America - the death of Martin Luther King touches off rioting in several cities within hours of the media broadcast;
1977 - New York - the grid goes offline at 9:30PM, the looting starts around 11PM;
1992 - Miami - Hurricane Andrew's winds haven't even died down before the malls are ransacked;
1992 - Los Angeles - the verdict is announced for the Rodney King Trial, and almost immediately, the city burns;
2005 - New Orleans - the looting started even before the storm made landfall;
2011 - London - a protest over a slain gangbanger turns violent and within four hours, Greater London descends into mayhem;
2012 - Long Island, NY - in the wake of Frankenstorm, enterprising looters dressed as powerline repairmen sneak past the martial law cordon and pillage, with 24 hours of the storm;
2013 - Oakland, CA - less than fifty minutes after the verdict in the Zimmerman Trial is announced, mass demonstrations "spontaneously" erupt, but in Oakland, fires and unrest break out...
Hours, people - not days, hours.

400 is an undersized battalion. After defections, it becomes a company.
