I don’t do my praying to William Shakespeare or to lawyers.

Apparently you don’t do much thinking, either. I was correcting the poster about (probably) the most mis-interpreted passage that Shakespeare has ever written.

So sue me.

By the way the word is “misinterpret,” no hyphen. But don’t worry...law schools these days produce a lot of illiterates.

I'm not a law-school (lawschool? law school?) graduate, but you are free to sue me for hyphenation . . . although I would suggest you consult one or two style-books (stylebooks? style books?) before doing so.

Not in the Blue Book. Have another one in mind?

I would have said “gild the lilly” is the worst mis-quote/mis-interpretation.

YMMV

P.S. Another one that kills me is the (mythical) Marie Antionette quote about “let them eat cake.” I looked up “cake” and suddenly it all made sense. *yuck*

P.P.S. I’d put news whores above lawyers on the to-do list. But things have changed since Shakespeare’s day.

As I mentioned, it's a pet-peeve: Shakespeare "said" no such thing. One of his characters did. And that character was intended to provide comic relief.

Fowler’s, Strunk & White, Garner’s, the Chicago Manual of Style. Nothing you would have heard of.

But you stick to that Blue Book, gunner. Even if you don’t ever make it through law school you’ll be perfectly prepped to sell used cars.

p.s. “pet-peeve”? Really? You should have used yourself as a reference in Post #13 when you left out the unnecessary hyphen. Any other unsettling tics you want to let your Uncle Whitey know about?

Beautiful. Which of those stylebooks forbids me from using a hyphen in the manner I chose? Direct citation, please, I have them all on my desk.

A good start would be a dictionary of the American language.

The dictionary will tell you that “pet peeve” stands without the hyphen.

Of course the dictionary won’t say anything about not using the hyphen the first time around, but then using it the second time around, nor will any of the stacks of stylebooks you have there on your desk.

Such reference books tend to deal in clarity and correctness, not randomness and ignorance.

All in all not a bad question, gunner. I think we are finally making progress.

You can cite me on that.

Ok, so you don’t have an answer. Got-it. (I added the hyphen to piss you off).

(I added the hyphen to piss you off).

No worries.

Next time you can take it out and stick it where it belongs.

Next time, I’ll wait to engage with someone who understands the usage of the English language.

That’s the way it works, my friend. Don’t google “stylebook” when arguing with someone who has them all on his desk.
