I was under the impression that the African slave trade was the sole responsibility of the Christian Europeans

I recall reading that there were more Europeans enslaved in Africa than there were Africans enslaved in America. I questioned the accuracy of that assertion and had intended to verify but never did. Perhaps someone reading this thread could confirm, refute, or perhaps just add to that assertion.

There were probably something like 12M Africans shipped across the Atlantic over the three centuries the trade lasted. Somewhere around 17M Africans were shipped (or marched) to Muslim destinations, but of course spread out over 14 centuries or so.

Around 2M Europeans were enslaved by Mediterranean raiders from 1500 to 1900, mostly in North Africa, while perhaps as many more were enslaved from Eastern Europe, but of course few of those went to Africa. The number would have to go up somewhat if you add in for the period from 600 to 1500.

So Africans enslaved in America, total probably ~12M. Europeans enslaved in Africa over 14 centuries, probably <3M. The total of “white people” enslaved by Muslims over the centuries probably at least 50% or more of the number of Africans shipped into the Americas.
