(Reuters) - Japan vowed quick, decisive action, including the use of public funds, to tackle the worsening problem of contaminated water pouring from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant, as the authorities step in to help the facility's embattled operator.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the government "will step forward and implement all necessary policies" to deal with the flood of radioactive water from the plant, a legacy of the world's worst atomic disaster in a quarter century.
The government will present a "comprehensive package of measures" on the water problem as soon as Tuesday, a senior official said.
Tokyo's measures come amid proposals to create a government agency devoted to decommissioning the Fukushima plant and as some outside the government call for a break-up of the operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co, or Tepco.

The entire Pacific Ocean is in jeopardy from tons & tons of daily radiation contamination. The Japanese government is powerless to stop it.
At this point what are they calling “quick?”
God has blessed this planet with remarkable healing powers. Still, I would expect a surge in Atlantic and farm-raised seafood from all of this.
Just as frightening is the fact that they have been blubbering along for over 2 years now knowing full well what sort of mess this is.
Anything.
Chemical half life on radioactive material is eternal relative to ours. The pearly gates might get more crowded from this.
Elsewhere, have read Alaskan sea like is suffering. Sea lions, King Crabs.
As fast as a government agency is able to respond. FEMA-quick. Like, really fast. Imagine molasses instead of ketchup.
The Pacific Ocean will be off-limits for commercial fishing, very soon. Unless you like glow-in-the-dark sushi. Better take a Geiger Counter to any seafood joint...
Methinks you underestimate the size of the Pacific Ocean. Most of those "tons and tons" is water. The actual mass of radioactive isotopes is relatively small. Just because a contaminant is detectable doesn't mean it is unsafe; in fact, low levels of radiation can even be beneficial to human health in some cases. And your expertise in support of this contention is... what?
Even with full dilution the result is pretty bad. But you don’t take into account that there is not always full dilution. Sometimes pockets of radioactive particles get concentrated and stay together...Even travel together in the ocean.
Until then.....
No, you don't take into account that I took that into account. I never said that there wouldn't be eddies and pools that concentrate wastes. I said that there is no way "the ENTIRE Pacific Ocean" would be contaminated. For example, the mixing along the equatorial countercurrents is relatively small, making an effective boundary between the northern and southern Pacific gyres. Hence, the coast of Chile would be relatively safe. Therefore, this would not affect "the entire Pacific Ocean, but would contaminate local concentrations above hazardous thresholds with the rest in various states of dilution.

Laminar flow of a mass body, who'd a thunk it. /s Stop with the projections, OK?
My credentials are impeccable. Head bung-hole of exalted tribe of Folkowwee nuclear astrophysians. Like any common Joe, I am an alarmist and paranoid conspiracy nut. Big deal.
The extent of Fukushima radiation voided into Pacific Ocean Is truly shocking. A horrific magnitude of toxic material is being dispersed into Alaska bound currents. Finally after two years of the Japanese government is taking charge. Let them have luck containing 450 day ton flow of radioactive waste. Waste so toxic the shoreline water constantly boils and steams.
Yes, this problem needs thorough evaluation, definition and a viable solution. Uncontrolled Radiation will be consequential, how when and where are questions for brighter bulbs to see. Casual observers recognize a tsunami when they see one.
Assertion without quantitative data.

The "tsunami" (Japanese for "tidal wave") released by the earthquake was far more energy than is released by a nuclear reactor. Chances are, it will also end up causing more deaths too. Your problem is differentiating "natural" disasters from any other kind. It is a failure to maintain perspective.
Waste so toxic the shoreline water constantly boils and steams.
This is an apples and oranges statement. The decomposition of radioactive byproducts produces heat. The boiling is indicative of the toxic potential, but is by no means a quantitative metric. I suggest you let "cooler heads" prevail.
Thanks for insightful dismissal professor. Cooler heads won’t go near Fukushima.
Oh and upon whom are you relying to deal with it? Guess what crybaby, it's part of the job. Maybe you'd prefer atmospheric mercury from coal.
If it weren't for ignorant screamers like you, Fukushima would have been replaced by a newer and safer design long before the earthquake.
