The war on coal has five new casualties.
A lawsuit brought by environmental groups has forced the shutdown of five Indiana coal-fired power plants by 2018, totalling 668 megawatts of power.

While todays settlement is a step in the right direction, more must be done to ensure that Hoosier families are protected from rising energy bills and the enormous health threats posed by Indianas reliance on coal-fired power plants, said Jodi Perras with the Sierra Clubs anti-coal campaign.
The Sierra Club and other environmental groups have been targeting coal plants nationwide for retirement, which they say contribute to global warming and cause health problems.
As part of the settlement, Duke Energy also agreed to create a feed-in tariff program to purchase at least 30 megawatts of solar power from Indiana customers or buy or install 15 megawatts of green power capacity.

Study Question: How do less-than-specks in congress plan to control the sun?
Higher taxes.
Study Question: How do less-than-specks in congress plan to control the sun?
More regulations.
Crack down on sun worship.
What ever happened to all of the limestone/coal fluidized bed research power plants? At one time, those were touted as the way to reduce emmissions, particularly co2 and sulfur.
“Hope those enviro-whackos freeze in the dark this winter.”
These elitists will always find a way to get what they need while the unwashed masses go without. It works that way in all socialist societies.
Hope those enviro-whackos freeze in the dark this winter.
They won’t, These guys and gals always manage to live in the most Temperature neutral places possible. On the other hand, more than ever I see a ‘backlash’ building up. What I’m not so sure of is if it will happen before CW-II or if these people will become ‘collateral damage’ during it.
In any case I do see bad things happening to and because of these people.
You don't have a very good view because you are getting your info from a political website that is not very credible.
If you were to get your info from a local Indiana source you would know of the 5 plants, one has not been built or even permitted, but the price tag keeps escalating.
The other 4 plants are small plants built in the 1950s that don't generate a lot of power but do emit a lot of pollution.
So what do they need to do? What everybody else is doing. Build natural gas plants because natural gas is dirt cheap.
Almost all of the new generating capacity being added thru out the country in natural gas fired. Wind and coal are a distant second and third.
Alas Babylon!
Global Warming on Free Republic
There needs to be a way to bill liberals for their “green” power and conservatives for fossil-based power. There’s really no good reason for greenies to benefit from the market-based price lowered by the availability of OTG power (other than green).
They are out there operating just fine. But neither does anything about the fictitious pollutant know as CO2. Limestone (scrubbers) and fluidized bed boilers do a very fine job of reducing SO2 (Sulpher Dioxide) and NOx (Nitrus Oxide) emissions. Neither technology does anything to reduce CO2 which is why the Enviro-Marxists reclassified totally harmless CO2 as pollution.
Their goal is unaffordable energy prices and economic collapse, not a 'clean' environment.
No, it will be us poor old Indiana residents that are going to pay and pay. Our state is mostly coal powered. So we are sunk. We are going to go broke paying for it.
Yes, we need new plants.
Richmond’s loony idea to replace the now-closed coal plant. is yet another trash-to-cash power plant, that will be yet another bankrupting failure.
” How much energy does that endless forest of windmills in northern Indiana produce (when they are running)?”
If you stop at the Southbound I-65 rest area, they used to have a board that showed the efficiency of those things. In April 2010, they were the most “Efficient”, generating 38% of possible output.
Yes, just 38%... For untold millions of dollars.
They don’t run when its too hot.
They don’t run when it’s too cold.
They don’t run when there is too much wind.
They don’t run when there isn’t enough wind.
They don’t run in icing conditions.
They don’t run when that month’s subsidy has been used up.
And let’s not even discuss the huge amount of migratory birds they kill. That would be too politically incorrect.
If these geniuses think that energy prices are high now, wait until they close enough coal plants that they can’t generate sufficient electricity.
Are you talking about the new "clean coal", "coal to gas" plant?
No, that’s the DUKE plant is southwestern Indiana.
Richmond,IN closed their coal plant on Jan 1, due to Obama’s new Regs, and have talked about replacing it with another stupid “GREEN!!” Trash-To-Cash powerplant scheme, like has bankrupted several other cities, like Harrisburg.
