As for the Saudis and Gulf states, they are Sunnis. Assad is an Aliwaite, and he is supported by Shiite Iran, which is why they want him out and a Shiite government in charge. No, it’s not about chemical weapons, but it’s not about natural gas either. It’s older than both.
I meant to say the Saudis want a Sunni government in Syria, not Shiite.
