Report: Assad moves weapons underground

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has begun to move his arsenal of advanced weapons underground in preparation for a possible strike on the country by the United States, Israel’s Channel 1o reported on Wednesday.

Since learning of U.S. President Obama’s desire to attack Syria, Assad ‘s forces have begun to move the weapons, including possibly chemical warheads, into underground bunkers. The process was accelerated when Damascus realized that the U.S. strike would not be a surprise and in fact would be delayed by a Congressional vote, Channel 10 said.

The underground facilities are similar to those built by Iran near the city of Qom in order to protect its nuclear facilities against attacks. This similarity is not coincidental. Most of the underground facilities in Syria were built by Iran and North Korea.

"With a range of only 290 KM, US ships can sit well outside that range and launch Tomahawks with a range of 2500 KM."

What are the targets? Definitely not the chem-weapons depots that could disperse more chemicals once hit. So what? Lob a few cruise missles at Assad and his weapons systems to punish him? That is the most ridiculous argument I've ever heard.

If we ever had a reason to stay out of "foreign entanglements", according to George Washington, this is it. Let them all those shithead Islamist factions fight forever, while it keeps them from targeting western civilization. Think Iraq and Iran war that lastest 10 years as the muzzies killed each other and didn't have the time on their hands to target us.

I don't understand why my post on the range of the Tomahawk missile and the safety of our ships has anything to do with supporting an attack on Syria. I don't support an attack period. It is not in our strategic national interests to do so.

Yes..they should fight it out...I believe had outside foreign governments stayed out of this..it could have been worked out between Assad and the protesters....but that will never happen in the ME.

When ANY M.E. nation protesters hit the streets, it's basically a call to Jihadists, MBS and Foreign fighters to descend and sabotage these protests...and that always under the direction and support of M.Eastern Nation state Leaders....they have a stake in any ME country and the direction it goes...battling each other for the ultimate takeover of the latest Dictator to fall...and this on the ground with their jihadists and as much behind the scenes in rallying western states to go along.

Therefor...the ME nations should be the ones designated to take care of the very mess they created.....and leave the rest of the world out of their affairs. Unfortunately the Saudi's have leverage with the US and have called in their chips.....thus all the "story lines" coming from Kerry and McCain and the media are constructed to make a reality palatable to the Congress and the Public...when in fact we would be fighting Saudi's war for them against Irans dibs on Syria...with Russia standing by to make their ultimate move.

There is no win...in Syria...they are all bad guys.

Comment from a 23 year Navy Commander:

..........................The Navy ships we currently have in the Med surounding Syria, ready to lauch their missiles are no match for the P800 Yahont missiles Syria has to defend itself from any attack.

The P800 missiles are simply too fast with advance radar and guidance systems and our ships have no counter measures to defend themselves from them....They could easily sink our carriers and their escorts without knowing what hit them.

Syria is also armed with the S300 SAM and the more advanced S400 anti-aircraft missiles which could shoot our fighter jets and drones down like shooting fish in a barrel.

Syria is not going to be a walk in the park like Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya where we controled the skies.

I wonder how Americans would react if they start seeing some of our ships sunk and our planes dropping from the skies...... A strike against Syria will escalate rapidly to a major war which we will again lose and all for what?

I agree...always keeping in mind the Sauds want to see Syria as an Islamic State...even if to get our help they agree to a bit more moderate governance, as with Turkey initially,...they will wait because they will at least have a foothold to take it over when ready just as has happened in Turkey.

Imo...there won’t be anything left of Syria as this destruction of the cities and rural communities continues....and when the US strikes all the more damage.

Quite likely then it will be a wasteland for Alqueda and Jihadists to train etc....if anything at all.

As so many have said..there is no good outcome...too late.

....”you gotta be a brutal son of a bitch to govern an Arab country”....

Yes. And why Egypt will always have leadership directly tied to the military there....regardless of the people wanting otherwise....the basic cultures are too volatile otherwise. None are ready for Democracy in the way we see it...they see it as winner takes all...

I think there's even a scripture reverence of "his hand will always be against his brother"...... so there is nothing this side of heaven that can change that equation...and why there will not be peace in the ME.....

Yes...they do know it’s Obozo striking...very well in fact...they are protecting the Assad regiem because otherwise they will loose their country to an Islamic state....that they know all to well. As for it being Democratic Pres. attacking them...they do not understand democracy...how can they, they’ve never had it.

I’m not so sure the people in the West want the truth tcrlaf, too many live in a matrix of their own imaginations, believing what they are fed is good for them because the government and administration tell them it is.

Most don’t care or have given up caring...and instead are focusing on their family’s and surviving the onslaught on our country....while we observe all the dynamics happening in the EU as they get overrun with Islamists....soon to come here in time and tide.

Agree on most of that except last paragraph. Had the saudi’s stayed out of it I’m convinced Obama would have done the same thing. There is a pattern - Eqypt, Libya, Syria. Obama sides with radical muslims. Also Obama shot his mouth off about the red line and is committed to doing something. He just wants to orchestrate it in a way that topples Assad. He wants his legacy to show he toppled 3-4 dictators. Who’s next after Syria?

The Saud’s were never going to stay out it...that’s who began sending in the Jihadists and foreign fighters by the truck load.....Syria is critical to them just as it is to Iran.....but they will not get their own ‘hands’ in the fight.....they’ve used leverage on their people and any nation who gets close to them...or relys on them...they know how to play their cards...(revenue and oil) and they do so to the worlds demise...they are not our friend and never will be.

The Sauds underestimated the Assad regieme......and also Russia’s defiance at the UN....that’s why they are calling in their chips now.

The word is out to Hezbollah and the foreign fighters not to intervene when US strikes......now who has that degree of power to make such a demand of terrorists?

Who;s next you ask?....Iran.

The P-800 Oniks (Russian: П-800 Оникс; English: Onyx), also known in export markets as Yakhont has a range of 120 to 300 km (74.6 to 186.4 mi) depending on altitude. Our ships can stay well outside that range and launch their Tomahawk missiles, which have a range of 2500 km.

Carrier groups operate well outside the coastlines. They are in no danger from the Syrians.
