Syria resolution in danger of failing, says Sen. Lindsey Graham
The Hill ^ | September 5, 2013 | Rebecca Shabad

The resolution authorizing military action in Syria is in danger of failing in Congress, Sen. Lindsey Graham said Thursday.

Speaking in his home state of South Carolina, the Republican senator said he has serious doubts that Congress will back President Obama’s call for strikes.

“I think if the vote were taken right now, it would be too close to call in the Senate, [and] would surely lose in the House,” he told reporters after speaking to constituents, according to .

Graham said Obama is "well short" of the votes he needs in the House because has failed to make the case to the American people.

“Mr. President, you’ve been uncertain, you’ve been unclear, you’ve changed your mind,” he said. “You have to now come out with a certain plan and a resolve that I have not seen.”

Graham, who is up for reelection in 2014, supports a limited military strike on Syria. He told reporters he plans to host a dinner on Sunday with Vice President Biden and more than a dozen Republican senators to discuss the matter.

Obama is scrambling to round up support in Congress for his Syria plan. With opposition building on Thursday, he canceled a planned trip to Los Angeles so he could remain in Washington to round up votes.

Graham said a strike against Syria would only be successful if it accomplishes three things: changes the balance of power in Syria, helps the opposition and gets other countries in the region involved.

“Saudi Arabia should be paying for this,” he said.

Graham was also critical of Obama's statement that a strike will be effective even if it doesn't come soon.

“When I hear from our military leadership that we can be just as effective 30 days after chemical weapons were used as if it were quick, I’m just baffled,” he said.

“Don’t you believe that [Syrian President Bashar] Assad is moving all of his equipment around? Don’t you believe that he’s preparing for a strike?” he said.

He will be primaried, that’s for sure. Several are lining up to challenge him. My one concern is that the opposition will be too fractured. He will definitely have the financial advantage. Already Huckabee has cut all these radio spots for him—and they are truly lame.

How nice that Bambi cancelled his trip to L.A. to actually work on the business of being president.

No wonder our stature in the world is falling. One minute we’re droning al queda guys, and the next we’re providing arms for them.

Graham said a strike against Syria would only be successful if it accomplishes three things: changes the balance of power in Syria provokes the Russians, helps the opposition al Qaeda and gets other countries in the region involved invites World War III.

Fixed it.

This is treasonous in my mind to be doing the bidding of kings and pursuing their foreign policy. We do NOT want to change the balance of power in Syria. The so-called rebels are really jihadists in one form or another -- some are sunni jihadists and some are Shi'ite jihadists, but nonetheless jihadists.

It is a sure prescription to lead to the ethnic cleansing of Syrian Christians.

And seeing as how there is zero American interest or national security at stake in this current civil war in Syria, it's all about regime change and building strength and power for al-Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood in the region and, in fact, is directly against the interests of America and our allies. This is treason!!

The congress must uphold its oath to abide by the constitution. Deny his request American involvement. And if Obama goes ahead and attacks Syria without congressional approval as he has threatened to do, the congress must move IMMEDIATELY to IMPEACH and REMOVE the president!!

Quislings like Graham must be voted OUT or charged with aiding and abetting treason and expelled!!

Well said, Jim.

This entire fiasco in Syria is the Syrians mess. We don’t belong there nor should we take military action over CBW use, we are not the world police.

The support for Obummer’s use of military force from Graham, McCain or any other Repub or Dem is treasonous and like you say, if Obummer acts without approval of Congress he should be impeached.

Like Sarah Palin said, “Let Allah sort it out.”

We definitely should not be assisting al Qaeda, the MB or any other radical muslims that have been killing Americans for years.

So true, my FRiend.

It’s treasonous to assist these rebel jihadists and these jihadists are going after Syrian Christians, in good conscience we cannot abet that.

Word of the Day: Quisling (Noun)

Pronunciation: [’kwiz-ling]

Definition: A traitor who turns against his or her own country to serve an invader.

Usage: This is a relatively new word so far without lexical offspring. The adjective would be “quislingly” which sounds odd. Better use the compound “quisling-like.” It sounds queer as a verb, too, though its meaning lends itself readily to verbalization in the sense of “betray to an invader.”

Suggested Usage: For those of us who remember World War II, today’s word is a powerful condemnation in its literal sense, “The French partisans were always at risk of betrayal by quislings in their area.”

Etymology: A commonization of the last name of Vidkun Quisling (1887-1945), head of Norway’s government during the Nazi occupation of World War II. Of all the heads of European states who chose to subserve the Nazi regime in World War II, Quisling was the misfortunate one commemorated for his weakness throughout the European languages.
