Gold miners in remote Alaska town want answers after task force storms in

Some miners in Alaska want the feds to start digging for answers.

A task force including members of 10 state and federal law enforcement agencies descended on a gold mine in the tiny town of Chicken (pop. 17) last month, in what locals described as a raid.

“Imagine coming up to your diggings, only to see agents swarming over it like ants, wearing full body armor, with jackets that say "POLICE" emblazoned on them, and all packing side arms,” gold miner C.R. Hammond told the Alaska Dispatch. “How would you have felt? You would be wondering, ‘My God, what have I done now?”

A spokesman for the federal Environmental Protection Agency did not deny that agents wore body armor and carried guns, but said it was not a "raid."

"The ongoing investigation conducted by the AK Environmental Crimes Task Force -- consisting of EPA, ADEC, USFWS, ADFG, BLM, Coast Guard, FBI, Alaska State Troopers, NOAA, & US Park Service -- did not result in a raid," the statement read. "The Task Force members involved in the investigation during the week of August 19, 2013, were EPA's Criminal Investigation Division & Bureau of Land Management's Office of Law Enforcement & Security, in cooperation with ADEC's Environmental Crimes Unit."

The investigation was into possible violations of the Clean Water Act, according to the EPA.

That’s a stretch, but hey. Getting water from the likes of reservoirs is not mining. Maybe getting it from wells, but who pumps the ore from a mine... lame simile.

Well, pour syrup on me and call me a pancake! Ya mean it isn't all made out of fairy dust? ;)

Sadly I have run into people who would not understand what you just said. Raw material and end product are not related in their minds.

All of you are wrong. Stuff is made in factories and sold in stores.

Mining and all that dirty stuff are just evil capitalist stuff.

Don't even consider tearing the tag off that mattress or you'll have armored vehicles surrounding your "compound".

An ancient Sumerian curse was “may the dead outnumber the living!” Our curse is that our government goons outnumber our citizens...

I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t hear in a few months about some guy in Chicken with an Obama sticker on his dog sled being attacked and eaten by a bear. Those guys just do not know how to keep a low profile.

Looked up Chicken on Wiki and found this little tidbit:

The median income for a household in the CDP was $66,250, and the per capita income for the town was $65,400. None of the population was below the poverty line.

I will be moving there shortly. ;-)

Downtown Chicken, AK (2006)

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 17 people, 6 households, and 4 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 0.1 people per square mile (0.1/km²). There were 21 housing units at an average density of 0.2 per square mile (0.1/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 100.00% White.

I never met a rat there in Chicken, but it could be the grumpy lady at the cafe who serves tourists. I always wondered about her. LOL

These brave agents risked their lives to keep America safe. We should respect that. Ok, sarcasm in the extreme.
